This leaves the question of wheather they will try to annex Odessa, which is west of the Dniper river that divides the country. The occupation of Snake Island may indicate they are interested in the entire Black Sea region of Ukraine. There is conflicting information regarding Russian presence in Odessa even in official sources. Odessa is the city where my great-grand-parent fought during WW2. I might be wrong, but I have a feeling in my gut that all south and east of Kyiv is going to get "annexed" by Russia and the Ukraine basically becomes a de facto landlocked country. Those areas are generally more Russified because they were part of the Russian Empire for a long time, while the wester parts were ruled by Austria-Hungary and Poland and are way more pro-Western. The new generations are very cowardly. I remember even here, few weeks ago, people were arguing that U.S and the West should stay out of it and not interfere with this war. Churchill once said to Chamberlain not wanting to upset Hitler with sanctions and interventions: "You were given the choice between war and dishonour. You chose dishonour, and you will have war." The more you give up, the hungrier they get. You give them crimea, now they want the whole ukraine, you give them ukraine, next they'll want finland etc etc... The only language they speak is the language of strength, something Churchill understood back then, and Johnson today understands to a letter extent. But we don't know if Putin's plan includes to extend his sphere of influence outside former Soviet countries (on Finland or other countries like these). Balacing the risks and consequences, a Russia-US war should be the absolute last option and should follow a Russian attack on NATO and not vice versa. There is an immensely scary risk of nuclear disaster among other things.. The World Wars happened after a demographic boom when Germans where confident they could take over the world. Russia is in a different place economically and demographically, so unless Putin is mentally ill or has a brain tumor, I don't think he plans a continental takeover.
