Should Gaga avoid scripts with comedic undertones?

House of Gucci may not be a comedy per se, but it is less serious than it could've been and it's quite "campy" as most recognise. There are genuinely funny moments in the story (especially in the scenes of Paolo, Pina and even Patricia at times).

There is a serious prejudice against comedies in the eyes of award circles and the public. I've been reading some of the Intrenet comments on House of Gucci, and most of them mock Gaga and Leto's performances, when it is precisely these two actors who get award recognition.  I don't remember Gaga being mocked in this way when she did A Star Is Born. At most, they thought "she was alright, but maybe not so stellar" but I don't remember a lot of people making fun of her the way they're mocking her for House of Gucci now. A Star Is Born is of course not a comedy and I think people are doing this to Leto and Gaga because of how it's "campy" and are easier targets because of that.

Another movie that is constantly mocked this award season is Don't Look Up. I haven't seen the movie but it's one of the few comedies in the Best Picture line-up. I don't think it's a coincidence that other tragic, "serious" stories are not the victim of the public's mockery, and only films like Gucci and Don't Look Up are. People just see more merits in dramatic tragedies, and it's easier to get recognised when you perform in those genres (Olivia Colman, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz clearly benefited from this).

I truly think that if Gucci wasn't this campy that it would've done so much better. Anyone who isn't Lady Gaga would've just been shut out of the award season because of the tone of the writing. It's actually amazing how Gaga got involved in so many precursors and at one point became the frontrunner.

I personally think she should take on only serious roles in the future, unless it was a master comedy writer like Taika Waititi or Wes Anderson. Even Adam McKay is criticised, so you can see how serious the prejudice against the genre is.

P/S: To be fair, Gaga may not have known House of Gucci was going to be campy before signing up. But yes, as far as she could tell, I hope she tries to figure out the direction of the writing/directing before taking on the role.

I think Gaga’s next role should be something like this:

A poor woman that gets separated from her family during world war and has to survive harsh circumstances only to contract a deadly disease by the end of the movie and die a painful death.

I want her to play few non award baity roles, but commercially successful than make a return with something strong, I want her to play Amy Winehouse in her biopic!

I will not watch House of Gucci

Are there producers who are making an Amy Winehouse biopic? There should be some news on that already if it was happening.

But the "musical star biopic" as an award-bait has been done to death recently, and it didn't do Jennifer Hudson that many favours. I think producers will give it a rest before returning to it again.

I don't know that she should avoid scripts with comedic undertones as much as she should avoid scripts that lack a clear vision.

I have wondered since seeing the film just what exactly pulled her into this, and I can only really say and it feel believable that Ridley must have sold it well or she just saw it as an opportunity to do something out there because I think she's smart enough to have been able to see what a mess the screenplay was/is.

I know a lot was trimmed from what was written and filmed to what was ultimately screened, but I refuse to believe that all that cut material really elevated the film to being any better. The script was the fundamental issue from the word go. It lacks a real overall purpose, it's incredibly unfocused, and plays like a first or second draft.

I think she needs to just be a little pickier with her next screenplay. Don't bet so much on the director and the pitch, pay more attention to what's actually in front of you. A good salesman can make any pile of trash look appealing, but you gotta be smart enough to recognize that no matter what the salesman says about it, it is still a piece of trash he's trying to sell you.

I wish Gaga was involved in Damien Chazelle's new movie "Babylon". A musical about Hollywood Golden Age. She would have been perfect.

Tbh I'd love to see her have just a very small role in a big movie where she plays a fun/funny character. I miss Gaga being fun sometimes. She's gotten so serious the past few years

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

It would be cool to see her in a psychological thriller like Black Swan or something.

Red wine, cheap perfume and a filthy pout.

Do we even know that the full script was sent to her before she said yes? I'm not sure how the procedures go.

I think she's aware of the appeal of that. She was supposed to play a minor role in the action movie Bullet Train after all. She only withdrew because of scheduling conflicts.

And she also said she's not against the idea of playing a superhero, I'd say she's not averse to "fun roles".
