So you are in support of Russia taking over another independent country?

This is a textbook example of a false dichotomy, and some little monsters liked it.

Dramatica

I can understand Russia's fear for their borders, NATO (which is basically an organization created to counter the Soviet Union) has been deploying military forces all along the borders with Russia: Lithuania, Estonia, Poland etc.. and they started negociations with Ukraine to "consider joining" the NATO.

I really hope everyone gets back to acting normal, Russia isn't an enemy country (no matter how much we may dislike Putin), I hope we can be mature about that and stop this military escalation between NATO and Russia that's gonna doom a whole independent country into uncertainty.

I didn't ask for a free ride, I only asked you to show me a real good time.

And that's what to keep an eye on. Political advisers to the leaders of the Normandy group (Russia, Germany, France and Ukraine) met in Paris on January, 26, 2022. They said they would meet in 2 weeks (which is somewhere around February, 9, 2022), and there are also meetings of German and French leaders with Putin scheduled for February, 2022. If these talks fail, the military operation is likely, but I don't see any reasons why Russian troops would want to move anywhere further than Donetsk and Luhansk.

Isn't the idea that taking more than just Luhansk and Donetsk ensures Ukraine can't get military supplies to these regions, and thus ensures the entirety of the Donbas region for Russia?

Hopefully the US Intelligence agency's tendency to be wrong about nearly everything continues. :huntyga:

At most times they are not wrong, they are just pretending to be dumb to manufacture a war. Like Iraq.

This hyping of the Russia-Ukraine invasion may not work as the rest of Europe will not let that happen. It's very near their land borders. They may also not want to see another wave of refugees. Right now, Macron is meeting Putin in person.

That's a fair nuance.

Isn't Putin's "justification" that the part of the Ukraine they want used to be part of Russia?

Yes, and Putin thinks Ukranians and Russians are the same people and that Ukraine should be part of the motherland. They share a lot of commonalities culture wise, and the culture of west Russia partially originates in Ukrain in the past centuries. Aside from that he refers to the east European countries as states that fell out of the motherlands borders, so it's kinda clear what kind of mindset he has.

His rethoric seems to have a parallel to Hitler invading the Sudetenland part of Czechia, because a lot of German lived there, he claimed it should be part of the greater German Reich.

I will never get people's greed for territory.

From a humanitarian and personal standpoint, of course I would never want a country to be forcibly taken. But at the same time, how is the US gonna justify intervening in Europe and Asia? It's been doing so for decades, and I think it should maybe just focus on itself.

What is someone like Alexei gonna achieve at the end? Putin controls so much politically within his own country and is already essentially an illegitimate leader. Everything is rigged in his favor.

Yeah this is what the isolationist nazis used to say in America. What's going to prevent Russia from invading all of its neighbors if Europe and the U.S stand down?

Hot war will not happen. Russia is trying to pressure Ukraine and the global community to abandone Ukraine so it can be re absorbed into Russia's sphere of Influence. Ever since the dissolving of the USSR, Russia has lost it's influence almost entirely in Eastern Europe to Western European nations and it has almost lost most of its control in the Caucasus to Turkey.

The only place it still holds a tight control over is Central Asia since it is so far from other regional powers other than China but China is friendly with Russia nowadays so they will not compete over Central Asia.

Russia is trying to obtain a sphere of influence. Not direct annexations anymore. Is this fair? No...because states are sovereign and should be aloud to make their own choices but we are talking real-politics...Russia is a force. To castrate it within its boundaries is ridiculous and no regional force would allow this. America & Western Europe influence much of the world, China influences Eastern Asia and South East Asia to an extent, Turkey influences the Balkans and Caucasus and Russia cannot just be relegated to influencing only Central Asia...sadly this means Ukraine must go back into Russia's orb of influence...this is just how the world works.

Big states need vassal states orbiting them and defending their borders. It's just how things go. Right or wrong does not matter in geopolitics.

If the US actually cared about stopping Russia, it would stop buying so much of it's oil. But it does not. And at some point interference needs to stop. It's weird that the world makes fun of the U.S. for some of its third world conditions but expects it to always step into conflicts it has no business in.
