I'm sure he had people in his team whispering things in his ear or acting to please him. Maybe he didn't like that his family didn't agree with hid actions or he harbored some sort of anger towards them and didn't want hear whatever that wasn't in line with his views. Jermaine was jealous of him, made a lot of diss songs about him, Latoya was a mess, and ruined his image even more in the public (even tho she was forced by her husband and was in an abusive relationship). His father, well his father was his father, he couldn't move on from what he did, and they couldn't have a normal rship.
