Gaga is being questioned on Twitter due to what she said in an interview: "capitalism and patriarchy destroy women"

"Poor Lady Gaga, capitalism destroyed her so much that it filled her bank account with 150 million dollars. I would be destroyed too."

"Lady Gaga is a hypocrite, she criticizes capitalism and patriarchy, when she has benefited from it."

"Lady Gaga even has a line of Oreo cookies named after her, what capitalism is she talking about?  😅"

What do you think about this, guys? :triggered:

Yeah, I think she got lost a bit in her privilege there. Tho we know her heart is from the right place, it does come off cringy like celebs singing Imagine from their mansions.

Capitalism is not that sacred… let’s not forget Communist Russia was beating America’s ass in the space race for most the landmarks. You know why? Bc those scientists had talent. Something Gaga clearly has too. She’s famous bc of that, not capitalism. She does not owe her worship to it and in an alternate universe shed def still be as iconic and accomplished as she is today.

So insulting.

This is kind of silly. One can be very wealthy, participate in business, and still critique capitalism. There are very wealthy people (wealthier than Gaga) who do so all the time.

IF one wanted to criticize her in terms of capitalism, one could go after the fact that she works with Amazon. That would be a legitimate point. But criticizing her for mentioning the detrimental impact of capitalism on women in general is stupid.

*That said, wealthy people speaking on capitalism often get dragged. I doubt this will be an issue in US twitter though because tons of US celebrities say similar things...

They’re right tbh. Those were my first thoughts as well.

It’s so easy to hate on capitalism because it’s the only system most of us ever lived in and it obviously has flaws, but people never lived better than today. She would’ve never become who she is if there was no capitalism.

Also, in terms of wealthy people speaking on capitalism (in general, not just Gaga)...what they are advocating is for paying much higher taxes and for better worker protection. They generally aren't being all marxist and being like "destroy capitalism." They are saying capitalism is deeply flawed...and it is.

And to Gaga's credit, she's allegedly one of the best loved musicians in Vegas because she hires union and pays very well.

YES, WE NEED PUR REVOLUTIONARY GAGA!

Reminds me of the time Britney posted quotes from the communist manifesto.

I'm all about it.

I also feel like people believe one has to either worship at the alter of capitalism or be a socialist or even a Marxist...when in reality there are a lot of people who think capitalism is deeply flawed but aren't going "destroy capitalism forever." The point is usually a) wealthy people should pay way more taxes b) health care should be universal and so on....

And she has suffered from it too. Most of her health problems are linked to that. It doesn't matter that she has 150 milions, she still has these problems for life.

She's right though. Why would her message be invalidated by her social status? So rich people can't be against poverty?

Let's get some things straight:

1. She worked A LOT for it.

2. Other people gave her the money and fame willingly, and not through a government-implemented mandate.

3. Having your name on a product is not capitalism in itself, although it can be used as a tool to achieve capitalist goals.

4. She was born and lives in a capitalist country, she is bound to be affected by capitalism. It's not her fault on which side of the spectrum she was put from the beginning. It's like saying the patriarchy doesn't also affect men negatively, even though they are in the "privileged" position.

5. Capitalism is the cancer of the US and it has spread through all its influence around the world.
