Like eradicating polio was disgusting.? Imagine the mental state of polio victims, it must have been so hard for them to know they had a disease that people were actively trying to eradicate.

You have to imagine that. Why? Because polio is eradicated. No-one gets polio anymore. No-one wants to go back to the time when people were disabled and died with polio.

Oh wow this is a truly awful comparison. Autism doesn’t kill people and is also not contagious and polio is not something you are born with and can’t change.  That’s the difference. What a cruel and idiotic comparison.

I don’t think you could’ve made a more worse comparison :awkney:

Autism sucks, yes, but what sucks more is being treated like a parasite and like if everything is wrong with you because you're autistic. People have to live with that. It'd be better to treat them with care and attention instead of being insensitive and treating them like an "it".

I remember seeing one commercial/interview from AS where a mother was dealing with her autistic child. She said she wanted to drive off a bridge with her child in the car because of autism. AS pities the parent, but not the person with autism.

Thank you @RAMROD for this thread.

Oprah has been mentioned a few times.  Oprah has done a lot of good in the world.  One moment worth mentioning is her short speech at the launch event of the Born This Way Foundation where she introduced Gaga.  Her words here, at Harvard, are inspiring.

The entire event can also be found on the internet.

I live outside the space time continuum.

Why? They do a lot of good :oprah:

Off the top of my head, I know they've provided life saving prescription meds to low income areas, sent malaria meds to poor parts of Africa, funded AIDS research, and they also do that annual global citizens award thing that draws attention and funding to people with exceptional causes around the world.

There was something about education too but that might be their family charity, not this one.

Either way, they've got good causes.

And she gets to deduct that ish from her taxes.  :yennefer: I would LOVE to see Gaga’s tax returns!  :fan:

I don't mind it, really. I'd rather all that money go to charity than to the US government to spend on their next billion dollar military plane :laughga:

I just felt a punch in my gut, seeing Autism Speaks up there . . .

Where they always bashed for their methods? Maybe she supported them before it started or because she was told they helped autists. :/

In addition to @Why am I on GGD already said, there is no way this site knows about every single donation these celebrities have made lol. One because I'm sure they make many private or anonymous donations but also, Oprah has been in the business for decades, and before the internet was so popular it was far easier to keep things like this discreet.

I don't understand why people are so opposed to the research that autism speaks does (preventing and finding causation). If anyone finds that autism is a disability (and it is), then certainly finding the causes and preventing it are necessary. There are other organizations that are more focused on treating people that have it. It may spend too much on fundraising activity, so I'm not endorsing it. But the flyer that I read,  listing the problems with it, was likely written by an autistic person( a person with the disability). So, the person writing the problem sheet wanted more gifts of money to be given to autistic families. I would argue that there is a need for the prevention research and that social security should be used for disabled, if they need it.

Autism is not a desease that can be prevented please educate yourself about autism

Girlies I know y'all go crazy when someone dares to criticize gaga but you SHOULD NOT defend her for supporting Autism Speaks... like, just do not. No one here is being like "oh she supports those she's evil", so please, kindly, shut it. And that polio comparison? I haven't seen anything that vile in this site in a while...

So long ggd, it was nice while it lasted.

My aunt got the polio disease. She was crippled by polio and unable to walk for many many many years of her life. My aunt wanted polio reasearched and prevented  and cured as much as anyone. It has been prevented by vaccine. There was no cure for people that were crippled by it. In my mind, it's a valid comparison.

I personally haven't done any research on autism. I'll just leave it at that, with the caveat that people need to look at the bigger picture.

I hope the mods gave you a warning for your polio comparison because Again autism is not a desease that can prevented or cured and so no its not a valid comparison the fact that you didnt do any research show that you have no idea what you are talking about so maybe do some research before making such a horrible comparison because poilo and autism are not compairable at all
