UK: Omicron 50-70% less likely to cause hospitalization

People haven't been ignoring illnesses, they haven't been able to seek proper care because of covid. It's a cycle. Maybe some people have been ignoring, but some people have been too afraid to go to the doctor/hospital because of the covid risk. A lot of resources (human and otherwise) were put into treating covid patients, making hospitals prioritize those resources into patients that were at most risk for dying immediately.

That's what I meant. Putting covid as priority over everything else has created a bottleneck.

Which is exactly as I predicted. Viruses tend to not get stronger years into their existence. Quite the opposite actually. Just rarely happens. All the media alarmism for nothing.

Not that it's not important to be informed and to be vigilant, of course. But we don't need to think the sky is falling every other minute.

That said, get vaxxed, get boosted. Then live your life.

Okay but "media alarmism" is literally just the media publishing statements from top research universities, CDC, WHO, and other reputable public health organizations. I agree that this is great news on serverity, but vaxxed people may still be sick for a few weeks. I'm still going to take precautions as to not be miserable for weeks on end. To each their own.

As my husband is the media, I can confirm this. He is only reporting what is given to them. He's honestly tired of talking about covid on air.

This is great news! The downside however is that it's more contagious which means it affects more people and by default more people will need hospitalization, so the healthcare system is still super overwhelmed rn and that's why we need strict regulations. I'm glad that it's less dangerous :firega:

Yuuup.

50% less likely to send an individual to the hospital is great and all but if twice as many people catch it then you (statistically) have the same number of people in the hospital :saladga:

I don't think it'll quite turn out like that though, twice as many people catching will most likely be majority younger people who aren even less at risk being hospitalised. And if the older gen have had 3 doses, then I think we're in a real strong position. We had 120,000 cases in the UK today, but hospital admissions still aren't rising in anyway they thought they would and deaths are actually down comparatively to the last fornight.

I don't think we can just say twice as many cases as delta will still end up with the same hospitalised.

I'm choosing to be optimistic.

That's why I said statistically :poot:

It's great that Omicron is so much less severe than Delta, although that is offset to some extent at least by the fact that it is a lot more transmissible.

In any event, I think we still need to be cautious over Christmas. In Ireland last year we decided to loosen the restrictions and treat ourselves to the full Christmas experience, and it took us eight weeks, I think (or was it as little as four, I can't remember), to double the number of covid deaths that we'd suffered in the previous eight months. It's a lot quieter this year.

Oh I agree 100%. Absolutely do anything and everything to avoid ANY variant. I know I do. But life doesn't need to stop, thank goodness, because Omi is here. That's all I meant.

Again, I'm boosted. And will get another booster the second they tell me to do so. I just won't live in fear anymore. Doesn't mean I'm going to go maskless, hang out with unvaxxed people, etc.

Haha. Sorry for misinterpreting it. I agree. I think there's only so much you can do.

At this point, it's not about being worried of dying from Covid if you're vaccinated and boosted, but the fact that MORE people will have Covid means that MORE people will be hospitalized. I said this yesterday, but my doctor who recently was working in a Covid ward explained to me that because Omicron is going to exponentially infect more people, even though the percentage of people with Covid who need hospitalization will go down, the actual numbers will go up because there will be so many people with it. I'm in the US so can't speak for other countries, but in my state at least, our healthcare system already is overwhelmed by Covid patients, so I can't even imagine what it's going to be like in a month or two with Omicron. For this reason, I can understand why large-scale events are being cancelled in order to slow the spread. The holidays are going to make this so much worse too. I know so many people who have Covid right now. It really is spreading like wildfire.

(Also, just a reminder that even if you get Covid and don't need hospitalization, you could be dealing with long Covid symptoms, which are not pleasant, especially the heart and pulmonary problems.)

Yeah i mean its simple math

If it requires half the hospitalizations but total cases quadruple for example, total hospitalizations still double

And looking at how its going, its gonna be a lot more than quadruple
