Young Activists In Canada Increasingly Fighting Against Nimbys Boomers

Canadas housing crisis that has seen housing soar year after year in a housing boom now in its 21st year shows no signs of slowing

 

Issues such as rapid population growth, slow approval processes covered by red tape to approve new housing and anecdotal claims of foreign investors buying up the properties are some of the stuff that has been blamed

 

However another factor is being Identified and that is the "Not In My backyard" people also known as "nimbys"

 

Often when municipalities plan something nimbys come rushing out in protests or court challanges against land development or desification near their neighbourhoods. These "Not In My BackYard" advocates are disproportionately more likely to be boomers

 

Squeezed Milenials who cant afford rent or a home on the otherhand are increasigly active in being activists on the opposing side showing up on debates to stress why development is needes

I wonder if theres more stuff to this than just hypocracy. Like the fact that blue states have the most expensive housing issues... i wonder to what extent higher regulation or red tape could also be an issue

 

Not every policy meant to help always results in what its intended to do and backfires. For example some forms of rent control has been known to make renting market worse over the long term by discouraging rental purpose projects

 

I can see blue states being much more likely to inact regulations like that than a red state

So do i to an extent. But i just think although its understandable why some wanna keep their neighbourhood the way it is... its also kinda selfish i think and a total failure to see a bigger picture

 

I dont think its fair that the have nots have to struggle ever more with insane housing costs because those that have their pretty picket fences already couldnt care less.

I live in one of my city’s “heritage” neighbourhood and omg the absolute fits and whining and grumpy meetings when anyone wants to build like, anything. We’re downtown folks, get with it, a tall building just might appear  

then they start complaining about homeless people

Even without these boomers there would still be a housing crisis. The main 2 problems are the rapid population growth, (which could literally be solved by just cutting immigration), and the fact that construction is too slow. Any other factors that add to the problem are very minimal

People want solutions to problems but then they dont like the solutions

 

Reminds me of ppl who hate on fossil fuels but then complain that wind turbines ruin the scenary

 

Like for real ppls unreasonableness and hypocracy gets on my very last nerves

 

PS: ironically im against a local project in my city but no so much because im against development but just because the spot they chose for this commercial storage building is in a really awkard 1 lane each way road thats already conjested (made wose by the recent addition of bike lanes that nobody uses cutting further into road space) and its in the entrance of a plaza thats across from another plaza so trucks going thru there is gonna be awkard as f*ck

 

But i didnt make a formal complaint im just suoer against it

 

But now im wondering if its a situation where nobody wanted that anywhere and thats the only spot they found that nobody local voiced resistance to

I agree but this issue does somewhat tie in to the slow construction issue

 

It makes finding new land for densification difficult and i wouldnt be surprised if when they say it takes up to 10 years just to approve a new condo in Toronto if these kinds of protests are adding to that equation

 

But yeah i agree, beaurocracy and red tape is insane in Canada for housing and so is lack of cordination between Federal, Provincial and municipal governments

 

And I feel politicians have bought into anecdotal claims of foreign investors buying up all our properties as a scape goat. That way when they do something easy that takes little effort like a foreign buyers tax or vacancy tax they make it look like they are doing something

 

We dont have complete data on how many properties are being bought by non Canadians but we do have vacancy rates data and that data does not support the idea that a bunch of foreigners are buying up houses that sit empty to use as a speculative investment. Data shows very low vacancy rates so homes are being occupied

 

Rapid population growth is just a bad problem in combination with slow construction. On its own it shouldnt be an issue. We saw far faster population growth rates post WWI and WWII not to mention the 1800s also... Housing never becane so insane because of it
