My statement had nothing to do with this list, or any publication.

Every time I see lists like this I realize Gaga has yet to put out a true magnum opus. Born This Way and The Fame Monster come really close, especially BTW, but it's really interesting that with all the iconic singles and record breaking there's yet to be a true Gaga 'bible' that stands the test of time.

Absolutely agree! If Gaga never released music again, BTW would stand as her greatest and most complete album, but as brilliant as I think it is, it doesn't quite manage that flawless 'finish' that albums universally recognised as greats have, if that makes sense. The individual songs are great, but the album has a slightly unwieldy shape, an awkward flow. If she were to put out an album that combined the boldness and wild creative abandon of BTW with the polish and the sense of wholeness that Chromatica has, she would be there.

Such a boring and predictable list lmao. Mostly men, very heavily skewed towards 'alternative' rock and acoustic sounds. I hate that this is still what is seen as "good" or "real" music.

But it is vited by the public so can't blame Pitchfork for this.

It's voted on by Pitchfork readers. If you watch Fox News, chances are you'd vote Republican... If you read Pitchfork, chances are you'd vote for Radiohead! 🙂

"lf you’re a regular Pitchfork visitor, you probably have some inkling of what lies below—AS EXPECTED, Radiohead made the cut—but we think you’ll find a few surprises, too."

Born This Way's ambition and experimentation with Chromatica's cohesiveness would be lethal, mix in a strong lead single and Gaga would be untouchable. I think she has it in her, but she just needs to make it a priority and a focus. I think right now she's very focused on acting and expanding her empire/entertainment reach. When she does recommit to music once more, I hope it shows in the visuals too.

a piece of work (album in this case) that brings together all different groups of people that agree this is top quality art

This is what I meant, thank you for putting it in better words. I don't think Gaga has this and, in my opinion (you guys can disagree), not even the ASIB soundtrack was close to that. I hope for the same, an album that is musically acclaimed in a way that everyone talks about it when discussing music of quality.

I believe her when she says she sometimes feels like she doesn't wanna do it anymore because you can tell her heart is not in it creatively like it used to be.

Oh Fanta. Oh the misinformation. She NEVER said that! 🙂 In fact, Gaga swore "on her future unborn children" that SHE HAS TO SING. She has to WRITE. Her piano lets her speak!!

She said that DURING her depression back in 2018-2019 she HATED Lady Gaga. She hated being a star. She doesn't anymore!

CBS News Interview (Sept 20, 2020):

Critics might say if it's that painful, why not stop being a pop star? Stop writing, stop touring, be content with what you've achieved?

Not possible, she says.  "Lee, I swear on my future unborn children! I don't know why, but I have to," she said. "This, I have to do it. SINGING, I HAVE TO. I have to. Turns out, even if I don't wanna be alive, I still know how to write a song!"

"I DON'T HATE LADY GAGA ANYMORE," she said. "I found a way to love myself again, even when I thought that was never gonna happen. Now, I look at this piano and I go, Oh, my God. My piano! My piano that I love so much! My piano that lets me speak. My piano that lets me make poetry. My piano, that's mine!"

Cowan asked, "What was the darkness? What was so dark about that particular time?"

"I mean, honestly, Lee, I just totally gave up on myself," Gaga said. "I hated being famous. I HATED being a star. I felt exhausted and used up."

She gestured to the piano in her studio: "DURING THAT TIME, I was like, You made me Lady Gaga. MY BIGGEST ENEMY is Lady Gaga. That's what I was thinking: My biggest enemy is her. What did you do?"

"Did you think about suicide?"

"Yeah. I lived in this house while people watched me for a couple years, to make sure that I was safe," she said.

She said, "Most of the time it is triggered by OBJECTIFICATION. If I'm at the grocery store, and somebody comes up very close to me and puts a cellphone right in my face, and just starts taking pictures ... "

"That triggers it?"

"Oh, just total panic, full body pain," Gaga said. "I'm braced because I'm so afraid. It's like I'm an object, I'm not a person." (Listen to 911 and Plastic Doll!)
