Olivia Rodrigo opens up on songwriting credits controversy

When “Sour” came out, the song “1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back” carried a co-writing credit for Swift and her producer, Jack Antonoff, because Rodrigo interpolated the piano chords from Swift’s song “New Year’s Day.” Then, months later, after fans on YouTube made videos about the similarities between “Good 4 U” and Paramore’s 2007 hit “Misery Business,” Rodrigo retroactively cut in that band’s Hayley Williams and Joshua Farro as co-writers on “Good 4 U” (with a combined 50% share of the song’s royalties)

Asked if the experience bummed her out, Olivia Rodrigo sighs, then spends a few seconds deciding what she wants to say. 
“I think it’s disappointing in general to see people discredit young women’s abilities and talents,” she says. “All music is inspired by other music, and I think it would be so cool if a girl 15 years from now wants to write a song inspired by something I made. That’s the whole point of creativity.”

 

"It was really frustrating to see people discredit and deny my creativity," Rodrigo told Time of having to revise her credits.

The Traitor singer further added that in her opinion, she's in her own lane, and whatever inspiration she pulls from others isn't an invitation to compare. "Songwriting is the thing I take most seriously in my life. It's the most personally gratifying, too," said Rodrigo.

by that logic Madonna (or writer of Express Yourself) should get royalties from Gaga for writing Born This Way. and that's stupid. c'mon, she clearly got inspired by her music idols and these artists acted like she stole from them and called it a day. i don't think they would've responded if Olivia wasn't the biggest act of the year and had the most sales and streaming. they wanted money, not like they were offended by her "borrowing" their melodies.

6 months ago i would agree with you but this is how things work now. Olivia made a big mistake giving them royalties so easily without a little fight and she set a super important precedent, everyone now will want royalties at the smallest and insignificant similarities.

omg, that's true tho. i wish she hold her own, but she's just 18. i feel bad fo her, imagine having such a huge success with your first album just for your favorite artists to act like a total morons.

yeah her team was prob trying to avoid copycat claims as much as possible with a legal battle and gave in to sweep it under the radar.

there was a 50/50 chance they would lose and they went with the option with less controversy to not overshadow her bright debut.

But as i said, now everybooty feels entitled and will keep an eye for a selener on future songs to see if they can profit from it. 

look what she made them do!

Plus the songs weren't really that similar. Both Misery Business, where Good 4 U had maybe a similar style.

And Cruel Summer, which bore no resemblance to Deja Vu whatsoever.
