Massive Monster 4,808
A bit of a conspiracy question which isn't meant to be taken too seriously... or is it. We all know that Gaga draws numbers in and has become an Oscar night sweetheart with the 3 show-stopping musical performances she's given. House Of Gucci had some major flaws (not Gaga's fault) and to be honest I am surprised that Gaga is getting so much praise by critics. I am happy for her but I just think she would shine even more in a better film. Maybe I'll get a surprise, but I don't see Gaga winning an Oscar for this film I could actually see it more for ASIB. My expectations are low, which is probably a good thing. My question is: do you think Gaga will be nominated because she is Gaga, to draw the audience and hype, or because of her acting in the film ? Or both ? Ready to get roasted in 3, 2... Kind regards

Meat 18,962
Gaga’s performance in HOG is miles ahead of ASIB. She proved that she can command the screen even without singing a single verse. This is her true breakout moment because she is finally being taken seriously as an actor. As for the commercial aspect, HOG is the highest earning drama since 2019, and 40% of the movie goers listed Gaga as the sole reason for their decision to visit the theatre. This shows that she can not only act like a pro, but also open a movie—even in difficult times like these. Everyone needs to remember that the Oscars are not film critics. They don’t care about rotten tomato scores or metacritic. They respond to movie campaigns and so far MGM has had an immaculate campaign for HOG. Gaga winning best actress at America’s oldest, snobbiest and the most prestigious acting circle is proof enough for everyone to start taking her seriously. She’s here to stay
avalon x 4,107
I think it's important we really isolate Gaga's acting and performance when thinking about these things. ASIB overall was an amazing film from the music to the way the story was told. But at the end of the day Jackson was the main character and Ally came second. On the other hand, in House of Gucci, Patrizia Reggiani is the lens of the entire film. The movie commences with her commentary and ended with her ultimate downfall. The story spanned three decades where she starts off as a young girl with almost puppy dog eyes and after multiple arcs and a ton of development of her character, she ends up a cold hearted criminal. (You can even see Gaga talking about the three different animals she studied to portray the progression of Patrizia's character throughout the film - the housecat, the fox and the panther.) Ally didn't go through all that. She did rise to fame very quickly and experienced massive changes as she did but the person inherently was still the same. So Gaga, while she portrayed all her emotions immaculately, didn't get many opportunities to show what she was capable of. There only were a few facets to the character. Also as a newcomer taking on a complex role like Patrizia and bringing a fresh take on acting to the screen and putting so much work into it (which shows), everybody loves to see that. LilyLark 9,928
No. Look, the Oscars clearly care about viewership...but that is in terms of who hosts, who does musical performances, etc. The actors branch, when voting, doesn't vote for "who is going to bring the viewers in for the Oscars." Actors do not care about that sort of thing... Now, the Golden Globes, Critics Choices, etc....those places do care. Places like Palm Springs, tbh, are kind of star f*ckers too. NYFCC on the other hand, as people above said, is a different story. So yes, some organizations/awards ceremonies probably are using Gaga....but not all of them (and certainly not the Oscars). That said, the Oscars aren't necessarily who gives the best performance. A lot of factors go into Oscar campaigns...from popularity to the box office (if a film is commercial) to if the actor is capital A acting (e.g. the voters tend to like big, showy performances). It's why people like Rami win and people like Viggo get nominated for certain roles that critics are meh on. HOWEVER......Gaga, in a way, does benefit from people using her for ratings (like the Critics Choice)...because that gives her a narrative of being "nominated" and keeps her in the conversation....even if the actors branch at the Oscars won't vote for her due to viewership. *I actually thought she was far better in Gucci than ASIB (and I thought she was great in ASIB). She basically carried Gucci on her back. I'm fairly objective-for example, I believe Al and Adam are technically better actors than Gaga. However, Gaga, in this film, gave a better performance than those two...and that's hard to do. And I feel like fans sort of got caught up in film twitter narrative and not the reality of most critics (e.g. Richard Brody, who is one of the harshest critics out there and did ding her a bit on her accent, compared her to Frances McDormand). All and all, though, it is subjective so I do understand if fans preferred her performance in ASIB.

PrettyLilMonster 361
I don’t necessarily think they are using Gaga. I believe Gaga will get them a good audience but in return a nomination or even a win will give Gaga recognition and chances for her future. So I see nothing bad with „being used“ like that if that means she will be able to do all her future projects and even more! Love, PLM
TortureMeOnReplay 5,830
MGM is using Gaga for this very reason. And it was taken into consideration when Gaga secured the bag.

Gaga's acting was on point but the writing/dialogue wasn't IMO. I think the worst for me was the soundtrack and the editing. I'm happy Gaga is being singled out, but I'm surprised this is happening with this film. Kind regards

Well technically the Oscars can't "use" Gaga because the nominations are decided by the Academy members, not the producers. Otherwise Chadwick Boseman would have won posthumously for Best Actor last year instead of Anthony Hopkins. And similarly, actors have won before not so great movies, like Rami Malek for Bohemian Rhapsody or Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady.
