One weekend in, the hotly anticipated 30 by Columbia’s Adele is on track to bow (at #1, naturally) in the area of 800-850k—becoming the year’s biggest debut and by far the biggest first week since bundling was eliminated from the charts

this is very interesting, since Red (TV) made more than 600k, i can't believe how dedicated Taylor's fans are...

The comparison is relevant but with caveats. By your own logic, you are saying that there can be no comparison made. What would be relevant is seeing the multiplier between the two of her records and comparing the multiplier of contemporaries who released albums relatively close to 30 and 25. :huntyga:

Back in the early 2010's, Billboard published some board with a multiplier to compare album sales from the 80's to the 10's, it was really well done, but I can't find it anyway. I know it's not a relevant information to an album released in 2021 but it's just a cool fact lol.

And by using this board, TF would've sold 60M WW in the 80's. As much as Thriller I believe

What you described is an entirely different comparison though. And it makes sense, but it's not what I was talking about.

Right. Just means that the formula used to make that multiplier would need to be reevaluated and adjusted to fit today's climate vs the comp.

Just from an intuitive standpoint, these kind of numbers for Adele are probably comparable to her previous record. Perhaps not quite as high but most artists get diminishing returns with regard to album sales over time and then increase returns with merchandise/tours. It's not an exact science but that is the general trend we see I think.

I'm not surprised about this though. The rollout of this album is a mess :fail: She didn't appear on any shows in the US for the entire week... No GMA, no SNL, no tonight shows... Nothing... They didn't even tweet about her new album coming out until Friday afternoon... It's tragic :smh:

I understand what you're referring to with regard to the rule change. My comment still stands in that you would want to make comparisons to records sold without bundles. Since we don't have a way of knowing who would have still bought the album without the bundle or would have bought the album in addition to the bundle because they wanted their 'sale' to count, it's not exactly an apples to apples comparison even with that kind of multiplier. But, it would give a general context of whether or not it was comparable to the previous album or not or alternatively to her contemporaries or not.

Not really. If there's half a decade between the albums and a crucial chart rule change then it's not a relevant comparison.

Especially the rule change —

Ariana's thank u, next did 360K in 2019 and positions did 174K in 2020, clearly because her merch didn't count, not because her popularity dropped by a half in a year.

I def think Adele isn’t 21/25 big but she’s still big and bigger than anyone else in terms of sales numbers. I think she would have done 1.5 million w bundles. I am not diminishing her success. 850k is unheard of in 2021.

3.38 million week 1 for 25 as a comparison.

This is a complete anomaly that probably will never be matched again though. Would be fun If she cracked 1mil but very very good Numbers anyway

The numbers are obviously great for 2021, but I do feel like they represent the truth that the music is connecting less with the people then before. It wouldn't surprise me if this is a frontloaded album and Adele won't be that present in 2022.

The truth where Cardi B's wet ass *** can have a better debut nowadays then an anticipated Adele lead single. I know that's right.
