The Brit Awards have introduced gender-neutral gongs in place of male and female categories

Prizes at the 2022 ceremony will be handed out to the artist of the year and the international artist of the year

The new award categories replace best male and female solo artist and best international male and female solo artist

The Brit Awards ceremony will return on February 8 2022, with Mo Gilligan on hosting duties, replacing Jack Whitehall, who has helmed the event in recent years.

Imagine if this was the 80s and Michael Jackson just released Thriller and all female artists have zero chance of winning any award bcs it's all gender neutral lol but now since everyone is mediocre we won't see any impact

exactly this! i'm confused, can someone explain how the new dynamic will work?

so now females, males and gender fluid are all competing in all categories?

it kinda makes sense, we should all strive for excelence, not just to be the best among our gender but overall aka the GOAT.

I can totally understand this, I think it's kinda dope to have one single category and the best artist wins. But at the same time if you have best rapper category and let's imagine that in a decade the rap game is at its peak again, and there's a new Tupac, how are female rappers gonna compete against that? They'll win nothing. And same for MJ, if one male artist is truly popping like crazy nobody has a chance anymore. Having two different categories gave more chances for artists to win awards

Yes i totally understand but how having two categories would work for non binary people? Maybe we are missing something?

You make a third category with demi, sam smith, and others and they have bigger chances to win too bcs they'll be fewer

it would be something like "Best Non Binary Pop Album"

i think that would make things even more complicated and awards would lose even more relevance (is it even possible?) than now.

I think it makes sense to just throw them all together and let the best one win

Ridiculous.

If you have two great albums by a man and a woman - who wins? One of them has to suffer.

If/when a man wins this awards - there will be cries that minorities didn't win.

They could ALWAYS win if they had their own category - as could women.

This makes no sense and harms the people it is meant to help.

On the surface, this seems awesome. But I feel this is a mistake. Gender based categories create an even playing field. Without them, women would never win anything.

It just shows how artificial awards really are. Haha.

I think this is a trap for female artists and gender non-conforming people. I hope I'm wrong, but I feel like this new language rules and the new society we are trying to create, in good faith, it's going to make resurging old problems that we, as a society, have been trying to solve for centuries. I'm talking about the silencing of the female experience or queer experience. I'm not optimistic about the future. I'm sorry if I'm being ignorant or something.
