Biden Says White House Is Not Considering Shutting Down Line 5 Pipeline

President Biden clarified rumours that the White House was looking to debate the demands from Michigan to shutdown Embridge Line 5 pipeline saying the White House was merely learning about the situation should it get involved but that it is not formally doing anything at this time

 

Michigan Governor wants the pipeline shutdown on environmental concerns such as possible spills that may contaminate soil or water

 

Other States and the Canadian side find the idea of simply shutting it off like that to be absolutely ludicrous as the pipeline provides nearly half of Oil, Gasoline and Propaine for the NE of the US and part of Canada and that abruptly shutting it off without substitutes would result in a massive gasoline and propaine shortage for tens of millions of people

I read Whitmer's op-ed about this and I totally get why they want to shut it down, but it's also just not realistic until and unless there are alternatives. I'm not sure why they aren't pursuing repairs or reinforcements as a stop-gap until that point because this seems like a losing battle without a backup plan in place.

The Great Lakes are such a treasure  I hope there's never an oil spill...

Yeah. Like were in a new world where the reality is the environment needs to be on the forefront of decisions...

 

But like within reason. When were talking half of supply suddenly chocked that would be total chaos

One of the issues is often the ones who oppose the operation of an ageing pipeline typically do not support a replacement proposal either so the old one can be shut down

 

That may be a good way to phase out fossil fuel infrastructure when were talking about a regular pipeline but when its a giant one like this, its too much capacity that would all of a sudden come off out of nowhere

 

I know embridge line 3 (also a big one) also went thru this. The replacement line finally came on last month but it took a long time of delays cuz it was always getting fought in court by those who opposed it but until the new one got built the old one which was severely aged kept being used and it was years past its original date it was planned to be decomissioned
