I think many people's issue was that Ed's narcissism manifests itself as patronising (oh please, I don't even want to be number one, Elton deserves this, it'll be his first hit in 20 years, by the way I was number one for 15 weeks) whereas Adele's narcissism manifests itself as matter-of-fact, straight-to-the-point bluntness (I will end him). The difference is she only replied (and in a funny way) to what the host said, while Ed was arrogant for no reason. You can tell they obviously don't share the same behaviour.
