Gaga's songwriting

I don't like saying that artists or people have a peak , it creates a limit or smth . It still is the same person working in a different project in a different time of her life, the talent is still there

Sometimes I think her lyrics are too literal but I also feel like they don't need to be better than what they are because simplicity is all you need, like 'Take my hand, stay Joanne' seems so basic at first but the way she delivers it is soft and gentle like she's at Joanne's bedside.

'Every part of my aching heart needs you more than the angels do' chokes me up every time because she understands that feeling of wanting so badly for them to stay and not go.

Gaga’s lyrics are uniquely her. Like the way she structures a song is truly a signature.

And it might be just me, but when other artist cover her songs, they come off cheesy, basic and are sung weird. But when Gaga sings them, they sound like a masterpiece!

It’s not cheesy so much as there’s campy elements that are intentionally cringe/ tongue in cheek

without the sincerity of understanding why it was written that way, you can’t really deliver the intention behind something like

“shadow is burnt

yellow dance and we turn

my lashes are dry

purple teardrops I cry

It don’t have a price

loving you is cherry pie”

please enlighten me to death

You nailed it. That’s what I was trying to convey! Couldn’t find the correct words.

amazing

especially on Born This Way and ARTPOP, such great lyrics

"I'm gonna marry the dark, gonna make love to the stark
I'm a soldier to my own emptiness, I'm a winner"

cmon

ARTPOP is a masterpiece.

“I try to sell myself, but I am really laughing.”

A lyric written in 2012/2013 yes so relevant in 2021 and the social media world. Show what others want to see and hear. :bradley:

"Keep my dolls inside diamond boxes
Save them 'til I know I'm gon' drop this
Front I've built me around my oasis
Paradise is in my hand
Holding on so tight to this status
It's not real but I'll try to grab it
Keep myself in beautiful places
Paradise is in my hands"

that's just so beautiful

"Run, run, her kiss is a vampire grin
The moon lights her way while she's howling at him
She looks good, but her boyfriend says she's a tramp

She's a tramp, she's a vamp
But she still does her dance
She's a tramp, she's a vamp
But she still kills the dance

Marilyn, Judy, Sylvia
Tell 'em how you feel, girls

Work your blonde Benét Ramsey
We'll haunt like Liberace
Find your freedom in the music
Find your Jesus, find your Kubrick

You will never fall apart
Diana, you're still in our hearts
Never let you fall apart
Together we'll dance in the dark

"

I Legit listened to that song about 20 times, while looking at the lyrics to memorize what she was saying. It is really powerful lyrics for people that have mental health struggles and/or depression. 911 in general is a great song that is a bop and that has true meaning. :kara:

I think her songwriting was really outstanding early in her career, from pre-The Fame through Born this Way, with unexpected rhymes, metaphors, and language that made every song really unique and exceptional. But from ARTPOP on it has felt more forced with fewer unexpected moments and more cliches and predictability. Lyrics at times don't flow or were made to work when they don't really fit. She still shines at times, but less often than not. I feel like it comes less naturally to her now and that she may have lost her drive to write like she had when she got the Rilke tattoo ("...confess to yourself that you would die if you were forbidden to write..."). She also relies on other writers more now which shows in her work and makes it feel less authentic. And I know it could relate to some of the struggles she's gone through since AP that can make it hard to get to that same place creatively. But there are a couple moments on Joanne and several moments on Chromatica where her writing still has the ingenuity that it used to, so I hope she can fully regain that spark in the future.

Chromatica Island

Turning up emotional faders
Keep repeating self-hating phrases
I have heard enough of these voices
Almost like I have no choice
This is biological stasis
My mood's shifting too manic places
Wish I laughed and kept the good friendships
Watch life, here I go again   I relate to this on a personal level and idc if other people wrote it with her tbh.

Same, 911 is the song I relate to the most and Replay is another one.

I like her more abstract lyrics from BTW

"She's just an American, riding a dream
When she's got a rainbow syrup in her heart that she bleeds"
