The thing to remember with variants is that if they’re not able to get a host, the. They most likely will not become dominant I.E. delta variant being the most common strain at this time, so unless it’s able to infect more people who have never had covid / unvaccinated then it likely won’t spread as rapidly and perhaps may die out as it’s not able to find a host to survive - this is just my hypothesis I’m at all by no means a scientist or an expert on matters I’m just as stressed and anxious as all of you guys haha

Mutations are random, so some are naturally weaker than others, but the weak ones die out quickly, so we don't hear about those. But when a mutation occurs that helps the virus get stronger - i.e. it is more easily transmissible, or it can evade immunity - it can quickly dominate the previous strain. It's natural selection, which results in the most successful mutations (i.e. the ones that are most dangerous to us) getting the most traction. That's why right now, almost all cases we're seeing are Delta (at least in the U.S.). Delta spreads more easily, so it sort of 'won out' against the original strain, and ultimately poses a higher threat to us.

We have seen so many mutations so quickly because of the huge spread of Covid worldwide. It has not been limited geographically or seasonally and airborne transmission is very easy. Every single time a virus replicates itself inside someone's body, there is a possibility that it will mutate. So when you multiply that by an entire world population, mutations are VERY frequent, and more dangerous strains are bound to pop up.

That's why mass vaccination in a timely manner is so important. If we could magically vaccinate 100% of the world's population all at once, people would be much less likely to catch and spread it, so the virus is much more limited in terms of the opportunity it has to continue mutating. Our vaccines stay more protective in that case. But if only some of us get vaxxed, and the virus can continue to run rampant due to a wide availability of hosts, it will keep mutating and could theoretically eventually mutate to the point that our existing vaccines would be powerless against it.

That's why it's just as harmful right now to be vaccine hesitant and "wait and see" as it is to say you'll never get the vaccine. In either case, the virus has plenty of time to evolve right now and puts everyone in danger, vaxxed or not.

That's also why we have to prioritize getting vaccines to countries that don't currently have them or have limited supply. Because even if one country is 100% vaxxed, mutations will still happen elsewhere and can spread again globally, restarting the cycle.
