Hmm I guess I agree and I hadn't really thought about it until now! I think he has done amazing work with women's roles but in terms of gay men it's been.. very lacking. The bald one from Hotel is the only "nice" one I can think of? Never a leading role

This just makes me think of the New Normal and how mad I still am it got cancelled. It was a sitcom about two gay men (who were actually written like normal people and not overly sexual) who start a family with a surrogate but the surrogate’s family gets super over involved in their life. I want Ryan to make something like this again the show got cancelled right after the surrogate finally went into labor

This is just another instance of the internet being a space for people too young to remember Gay Liberation and queer resistance. Screw normaitivity and screw civility. Let queers be pervert addicts. That's what queer elders fought for. Not for everyone to turn into moralizing normals who want to be "respectable." Learn queer history. Watch New Queer Cinema. People are losing the plot.

it's really not his fault people keep watching and networks keep buying his shows. He's 1 person, there are 1000s of writers and plenty of shows to watch if you're sick of it. Let artists exist without constantly reinventing everything about themselves. Just go look for different stuff from other people! sigh.

Bae this isn't a non-fiction person, they're characters written around the same stereotype. And when you have millions of people that watch, they're told that this is the norm among the gay community, effectively stigmatizing them and undoing the gay liberation.

They're asking for the gay community to be portrayed as the diverse community it is and not to simply be boxed into "gay perverted addict", this isn't reinventing the wheel.

make a main character asexual and don't write them a love interest for the whole duration of the show challenge.

i feel like the concern is more on the s*x part of the problem and not the gay side. don't tell me he doesn't try to film weird scenes to shock the viewers. ahs, in particular, doesn't need that so excessively, if he wants to explore the subject matter he can actually make a sexx positive series and focus on everything like that, plus he'll reach the people who are into it. American S*x Story, make it happen. and work on the horror element with ahs.

He didn't really shut down the complaint tho, did he... he was just like 'yep, I do that' :laughga:

I don't necessarily mind, but I also don't think he's a very good writer - I think his shows are captivating more so because of presentation rather than substance - everything looks great and everyone is hot, that's it really... Dialogue and character development are the least interesting things about his shows, to me at least :vegas:

It's a joke! When you give me that look, it's a joke!

Cult has two whiney lesbians as the main characters just a reminder to everyone on the hate train.

In reality the only thing that he “shut down” were his ratings. He has to have dirt on someone at FX to have been renewed this many times after delivering bullsh!t

I think he responded the way he did to het under the persons skin. He may be letting the tweet linger in his mind causing a shift in his writing. Everyone gets defensive about their work but give them time to reflect.

The point is they're insisting a queer artist should represent a certain kind of queer person. The choice of phrase "gay perverted addict" is obviously reflective of their judgement of people they feel fit that bill. Denigrating people on the fringe who are drug users or kinky or promiscuous is not a queer stance. Wanting queer characters to be respectable is a symptom of homonormarivity. There is other queer art in the world besides Ryan Murphy. Let him make what he wants. There is no wrong version of being queer, especially owing to sex or drugs.

It's not so much as him writing perverted gay roles, it's him always casting the same type of white man to live out his sexual fantasies
