janetjackson 249
This reminds me of those mashups where they lay in every pop song that has the same chord progressions. I hate to say it, but non-musicians often don't understand how interrelated all music is. This revelation is really just non-musicians figuring out where she and her collaborator might have gotten their inspiration. All music is drawn from the same source. The same 12 notes, and limited combinations of meter and rhythm. If you notice, Elvis Costello has no problem with it because he is a musician himself. He understand that the source of all this is beyond any one human being. All musicians are weaving the fabric of musical history. This is why I think it is so problematic to have non-musicians as judges and jury preside over legal cases. That Blurred Lines case really did blur our understanding of "ownership" in music. flyaway 15,350
Everything is plagiarism in life. There's no such thing as complete originality. Just some ideas stick to a name, and people like to compare with others. So no, Paramore did not invent that sound. The songs sound very alike but that's not a bad thing. The fact that Paramore didn't demanded credit for it back in May, speak volumes, they just waited til the song spent several weeks at #2 on the hot 100 and was named song of the summer to demand credit. 13 | this is my dancefloor i fought for, your voice is louder, it echoes

How do you know they didn’t demand credit back then? It’s like you can have a whole lawsuit start and finish overnight, that stuff takes months
Franch Toast 26,879
I said this on the other thread, but there is no evidence that Hayley is the one spearheading the credit for her & Josh. It sounds like it was the label and/or Olivia's team preemptively offering them credit. I'm not sure why y'all are grabbing your pitchforks and coming for Hayley/Paramore the band when there's no evidence that they're the ones behind this. tyler k 5,330
this is ridiculous lmao everything is influenced by something else. everyone takes a cue from their favorite artist and implements into what they're currently working on. the Misery Business "sample" is totally uncalled for tbh, it's not the same melody nor is it interpolated like the New Year's Day/1 step forward 3 steps back. it merely sounds similar, that's all. mmmy name ~isn't~ aliceee

gothicdream 39,580
Some of these are stretches. But others have merit. I think the reason all these accusations keep coming up is just because her music, aesthetic, etc. doesn't have much originality overall. Most of it isn't plagiarized from other artists, but she's taking (heavy-handed) inspiration and then not really doing anything different with it imo. So it becomes really easy to find these types of comparisons to other artists. But the Paramore credit was 10,000% deserved. I'm honestly surprised so many people disagree. Cookie Tookie 10,546
Imagine not knowing what a sample is. Sampling has occurred in music for years. You can discredit her all you want, but unlike certain pop girls (including Gaga), there’s only 3 writers on Sour total with Olivia being the main writer. Not 20+ writing credits. Taylucifer 5,154
no, she's young and has obvious influences on the album, there is nothing wrong with that. In almost every artist's debut work you can see those influences, she has just risen to fame so quickly and has been put under a microscope in a way many have not. She still wrote every song on that album and I'd bet that adding an artist to the list of song writers is a lot easier and cheaper than getting it settled in court.
