Charlie Watts, the Rolling Stones drummer who propelled the band’s sound for nearly 60 years, has died aged 80.

A statement from his London publicist, Bernard Doherty, to the PA Media news agency said: “It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Charlie Watts.

“He passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family. Charlie was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and also, as a member of the Rolling Stones, one of the greatest drummers of his generation.”

It can still be a shock, especially at 80 since it's relatively young by today's standards.

Bye bye Charlie ! The oldest one is gone first... :hmm:

This will lead to a radical change in the next Rolling Stones sound and feel. Charlie's somewhat askew drumming style was a strong component of the Stones signature.

He'll be sorely missed !

Late to the party but I got a diamond heart

Rest In Peace. A legendary member of a legendary band, It was an honor as a fan to witness Gaga play alongside the stones in 2012. One of my favorite performances of all time.

Damn, 80 years old and still whacking those drums up to recently. I see Mick Fleetwood still at it too. I don't know how..

RIP. I think he stayed with his wife since 1964. Mick should have learned a thing or too about loyalty from him.

RIP. The Stones are quite simply one of the alltime greatest acts in the history of popular music. Possibly coming in at number 3 after The Beatles and Elvis ? They're right up there anyway, and Charlie was a part of it from day one. A major loss. RIP.
