Y'all really can't take any form of criticism huh :ladyhaha:

I haven't seen the 1976 version, but I wiki'd it.  It says it was a huge box office success but got mixed reviews, praise for the music and the performances, criticism for the screenplay, lack of originality and runtime. It got four oscar noms, cinematography,  score, sound and original song, winning for original song only (sounds familiar).

The interviewer set Barbra up to heap praise on Beyonce and then the movie. Maybe Barbra resented being told what to say. Who knows ?

And? Honesty can also be unnecessary. Sometimes the best is to shut up.

She's just mad she's the only actress not to be nominated for Best Actress for A Star Is Born.

Barbra Streisand has every right to have her own opinion.

Moreover, she has not said anything that is not at least partly agreeable.

I like ASIB, but as a cinephile I can't deny that it doesn't add much to what has already been said and done in the three previous films, apart from Gaga's presence and the songs.

I think it's an excellently made Crowd pleaser, but the 1954 version with Judy Garland remains the absolute masterpiece of the four.

🙄 It's not the criticism that's the issue. It's bizarre that she would come to the set and meet Bradley and Gaga and enjoy them making a fuss of her, give interviews praising them... And then shade the movie 2 years later. I mean.. It's Hollywood all over. Very... Shallow.

But sure, it's bc we can't take criticism 🤡

Anyway nobody can take away the success of the movie or the soundtrack. It did what it needed to do.

I feel that she could have phrased it better because she knows her comments could come off as snarky or jealous tho

It's exactly why it's praised. It honoured the roots of A Star Is Born while injecting to it a modern relevance that resonated with modern audiences. It shows how we're still struggling with the same struggles (addiction, chasing fame, selling out ourselves, suicidal tendencies, struggling with mental health) in this present era, and the execution was fresh enough for us to not perceive these as cliches. You're telling me A Star Is Born (2018) was cliched? No. And that's incredibly difficult to pull off already.

It's not so much about the themes that are evaluated when it comes to the merits of a piece of work, but the execution. Just like how Katy Perry and Rebecca Black both made a song about Friday, Katy did it later but Katy did it better.

perhaps, instead of “originality” (which does not even exist, btw), she should care more about consistency and honesty. 🤡

my initial thought was that the funny girl broadway rumors might be true, she’s aware of that project, and that’s what’s really bothering her: gaga’s next move being similar to hers again. that’d be a skewed perception, i’d argue—but it might be hers, which would explain her change of heart and implied envy that she tried to convey in a subtle way, not even directing it at the real target, gaga. just be more like cher and celine, streisand. don’t stray away from the path of grace and supportiveness of their legend status. 🐒

Doesn't come across as rude or snarky at all to me. All she said was she was surprised it ended up being similar in style to her version because initially it was supposed to go in a different direction...which would've been interesting to see given how she herself had wanted to approach the movie differently to Judy's version. Personally I think it's cool that they wanted to honour the 70s version with a modern twist, but I can see where Babs is coming from.

People are allowed to critique something at the same time as praising it; I know this new online culture doesn't allow for gray areas in discussion, but it actually IS possible to have multiple (and conflicting) opinions about the same thing. Barbra has been so kind about Gaga and the film in the past, but also thinks the movie could've been more original. It's a perfectly fair (and generous imo) critique of a movie which, aside from the great acting and stellar soundtrack, is quite weak.

Maybe it's more than Gaga we care about.

Maybe we also care about the movie. Yall act like our minds only revolve around Gaga. We are capable of appreciating more than her, we appreciate Bradley, the supporting cast and the writers as well.

The wild yet restrained look in Gaga’s eyes makes this look like the immortal witch Scathach was adopted and socialized into modern society by a nice rich sugar mama and her boy toy, and they all live in Long Island while babey goes to private school in the city and can’t seem to keep a nanny for more than a few weeks :partysick:

I would watch this sitcom :vegas:

And much like the singer-songwriter fare of A Star Is Born (2018), Gaga will eventually become Bradley’s character’s love interest. :trollga:
