Fresco 1,688
When I think back on the news stories, this seemed inevitable. There were reports of Americans dropping off suitcases of money at offices where no-one was working. They rebuilt schools specifying air conditioning, but by the time all the official's bribes were paid, the schools ended up with fans instead of air conditioning. There have been reports for years of the taliban bribing local military into surrendering and giving up the weapons. I wonder who got paid how much to surrender this easily. They had a 300,000 member military, well equiped and fighting to defend their homeland. My assumption is that the military was defeated by corruption instead of battles. If the Taliban wants a little dusty homeland, then let them have it. However, the Taliban needs to stop it's stated desire of turning the whole world into something run under their rules of law. It won't ever happen. Never. They are not fighting in uniforms, the videos show the Taliban in street clothes. I do hope the diplomats find a way out safely. This is so disappointing on so many levels. Time for some underground heroics, I guess. However, I agree that it was time the USA get out. That independent country had plenty of time to stand up a fully functioning defense. If the country had become a US territory and had started paying taxes and adopted US constitution and laws, I might have felt some need to continue military bases. But no. So no. Corrupt f*ckers want that kind of law, that's what they get.

mvstraw 1,396
Yes let's just leave the country and its citizens. I'm sorry but where is the Afghan military that was trained by NATO? Where are the leaders? Why no one is fighting back? Now there will be another wave of refugees that Europe will have to take.

Dominic 11,922
I've struggled to speak about it without swearing and shouting profusely. It's only going to get worse and so many innocent lives lost. I fear for all the minorities, women and dogs who will be mercilessly killed. The hardest thing in this world is to live in it

Trump had negotiations set in place with these people. Just like he did with Putin and other dictatorial world leaders. The USA spent 48 hours bombing the living hell out of the Middle East after 9/11. We watched over every major network while our grieving nation took out its frustrations on the countries which housed the few who actually took responsibility for the acts. We punished an entire religion and created the beast that now has rule over the country we needlessly spent 20 years and 2 trillion dollars occupying after our initial attacks didn’t fulfill the hatred that took hold of us. This is a failure of the red, right, blue, left, and white as a whole. Now other countries like France and England who take in the refugees of the mess we’ve made our forcing their citizens to pay the price by having radicalized zealots free to cause chaos and terror in their homelands. If the US was so hell bent on war, and backed by all other nations in their actions, then it should have been a war and not an occupation. You either blast them off the face of the earth and be done or leave them the hell alone. You can’t spend 20 years trying to change other people and their cultures in the age we live in and not expect innocent people to suffer needlessly when you leave. As an American I am constantly appalled by the actions of our government in other countries all in the name of doing the greater good by making them like us as if we are actually a model of what other people should be. There are countless of progressive Muslims, like there are progressive christians. Also, Islam doesn't force wearing anything. That's the interpretation of the texts, and a very conservative one at that. You could say the same thing about Catholicism and the nuclear family and their traditions and clothing customs. Some people really don't realize there's over a billion Muslims in the world. If it were objectively an oppressive death cult, we'd all be dead. Don't let some bands of violent psychos or twisted governments give ~24% of the human race a bad name. Whimsical bitch
ctherainbow 3,162
The media coverage of this is so ****ing melodramatic. We all knew the Afghan government would collapse the second we stopped propping them up, so none of this should be surprising. The sole area in which I am disappointed by the Biden administration is the lack of an effective refugee resettlement plan. We shouldn't be scrambling to save the people who put themselves and their families on the line for us. I'm talkin' 'bout forever, baby.
