Literally there is nothing the west can do to force human rights and a culture of equality and respect for the rule of law upon a society. It's like trying to go back in time and force European countries from 14th century to adopt a democrat system - they were not ready for that at that time, like the Afghanistan wasn't ready for that 20 years ago or even now. It was a mistake to go there in the first place. What we are seeing now was inevitable all along. State-building is a fantasy.

Right, west usually takes all these rights from people in the east, take their goods, capitalize on their lands and then wonder why it takes so long for people from east to respect the rule of law

My friend’s father who served 2 tours in Afghanistan is probably losing his marbles right now. What was it all for?

While I personally did not join the military, I know some folks don't have that privilege of choice due to their own circumstances. We promise free college and benefits to kids if they do their time, and here we are with traumatized people with crappy VA mental health assistance. My uncle served time over there and watched his best friend die before his eyes. I do not agree with our country's participation, or the government's continued manipulation and lies to their own people. I will, however, spread kindness to the people that served and now face the reality that all of this money, destruction, and turmoil was for nothing.

I was raised in an Islamic family; I don't practice- but still outside of the country (my name contains 'Mohammad' and 'Hossain')- and the amount of islamophobia I encounter that's very pathetic.

Yup. Even Americans are wanting less American intervention. Many of the issues we face(d) in the Middle East were direct results of our own previous actions. It's just a series of shooting ourselves in the foot.

We should do what we can from a humanitarian point but it's well past time we stop putting American boots on foreign soil and occupying other countries.

The Pope is the first one to say so about gays after millenia of other popes. Give it some time, damn. There are countless of progressive Muslims, like there are progressive christians. 

Also, Islam doesn't force wearing anything. That's the interpretation of the texts, and a very conservative one at that. You could say the same thing about Catholicism and the nuclear family and their traditions and clothing customs.
