Gucci has more buzz than ASIB

A few days after the House of Gucci trailer dropped, I noticed an undercurrent of dissatisfaction here about the buzz surrounding the film. Some were saying that they felt ASIB had more impact on arrival and that not enough people were talking about this movie.

Well, I think those fears are misplaced. To me, House of Gucci seems to have way more buzz than ASIB ever did when its trailer dropped. Here's why:

1. Trailer views

As of today (Aug 9, 2021), 11 days after it was released, the official trailer on MGM's Youtube channel has 9.8 million views. This does not include the countless other uploads on Youtube which easily push the trailer over the 20 million mark on Youtube alone. (Universal Pictures UK - 2.3M, Lady Gaga - 2.2M, Universal Pictures Mexico - 1.3M, Universal Pictures France - 1.1M, Universal Pictures Spain - 976k, One Media - 948k, Eagle Pictures - 834k... I could go on).

Do you know how many views the ASIB Trailer had almost 50 days after it was released? 5.5 million*

Even in September, just after the film premiered in Venice, and almost 90 days since the trailer was released, the views were still stuck at around 6-7M views*. Of course, the trailer is now at 35M so we can assume things really took off after its theatrical release as well as during awards season, but it's easy to forget just how little waves the trailer made in the summer months of 2018.

2. Google search volume

To evaluate the search volume that was generated after the House of Gucci trailer dropped, I used Google Trends, and compared it with the ASIB trailer. The search "scores" are scaled from 0 to 100. I compared the search terms "House of Gucci", "Gucci", and "A Star Is Born".

In the graph below,

A - Release of the ASIB Trailer. Google search score of 13.

B - Release of ASIB in theatres.

C - Oscars.

D - Release of the Gucci trailer. Google search score of 8 for the term "House of Gucci". BUT WAIT. Searches for the term "Gucci" also rose sharply that day, from an average of about 34 to 44. Combined, this probably matches, if not exceeds the search volume for the ASIB trailer.

3. Media Coverage

11 days after the ASIB Trailer dropped (June 17, 2018), not a SINGLE article can be found on Google News about the upcoming release of the film. In all fairness, June 17 was a Saturday, so I checked the day before and there were about 7 articles, most of them not even about the movie.

11 days after the Gucci trailer dropped (today), you do a search for the term "House of Gucci" in Google News, and you get FIVE PAGES of new articles about the movie that were published in the last 24 hours, in multiple languages.

4. I can feel it in my bones

This reason is not very scientific, but anecdotally, I can sense a lot more buzz for Gucci than ASIB. With ASIB, once the trailer had dropped, it felt like the hype had died down fairly quickly. Not so with Gucci. People are still reacting to the trailer on Youtube. Facebook locals and soccer moms are still going crazy over it. I still see articles being published about things you can watch or read to get yourself prepared for the movie.

I think this comes down to a couple of reasons: the all star cast, the ties to an internationally recognized and prestigious fashion brand, the glamor and the intrigue of the story, Jared Leto's transformation, and yes, even the accents. ASIB was quite the opposite: debut role for Gaga; debut directing stint for Bradley; a remake of a remake of a remake. The latter had more of a "slow burn" sort of hype, whereas the former is putting all of its cards on the table.

Now I'm NOT saying that Gucci will ultimately do better than ASIB at the box office and with critics. The complete opposite may even be the case. But I just thought I'd put to rest some of that "dissatisfaction" I had mentioned at the beginning of this thread and say that the Gucci trailer is doing just fine.

I agree. This was a cultural moment. It remains to be seen how well the film will do, but it’s being talked about a lot.

Thank you for this post!! I agree that is going to be much bigger than ASIB. There are elements of ASIB that will never be beat but honestly this movie isn’t even completing with those past achievements. This is an original role and movie with an out of this world cast that she is leading as an actress ONLY. This is huge. As long critics don’t pan this (which I seriously doubt is going to happen!) this film is going to be a knockout for everyone and Gaga will receive several nominations. MGM has to decide if they are going to push Gaga or JHud for the oscars campaign (they could do both but typically studios go for one over the other) and just from the release date, trailer, and who is involved I think they made up their minds.

Thanks for collecting that info and sharing it. You made me realise how big this movie is going to be with this part...

I think fans are so focused on this being Gaga's next big role and what this era is going to be for her that we forget all the other aspects.

It has more hype than A Star is Born seemed to around this time, but we still have to see how it does with critics and what the first impressions are when it debuts to see if it’ll have the same hype and word of mouth that A Star is Born did. But I think it will.

Yeah. But buzz doesn't always translate into box office. And a highly anticipated film can really underwhlem. A Star Is Born benefited from everyone thinking it would be a throwaway vanity project. But Gucci is starting off predicted for Best Picture. So, I am nervous. I don't think it will be a real Best Picture contender and likely there will be a major come down when people finally see it. But hopefully Gaga still at least gets the nomination.
