FfFfFfFF 58,371 Posted August 7, 2021 Share Posted August 7, 2021 2,400-Year-Old Baskets Still Filled With Fruit Found in Submerged Egyptian City Researchers excavating the sunken ruins of Thônis-Heracleion have discovered an array of archaeological treasures. (Christoph Gerigk © Franck Goddio / Hilti Foundation) Incredibly, the vessels still contain doum nuts—the fruit of an African palm tree considered sacred by the ancient Egyptians—and grape seeds. “Nothing was disturbed,” marine archaeologist Franck Goddio tells Dalya Alberge of the Guardian. “It was very striking to see baskets of fruits.” Goddio and his colleagues at the European Institute for Underwater Archaeology (IEASM) uncovered the containers in collaboration with Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. Researchers have been surveying the ancient Mediterranean port city of Thônis-Heracleion since its rediscovery in 2001, according to Egypt Independent. There are some fascinating palm fruits, like Palmyra palm fruits, which have a translucent and jelly-like consistency and taste similar to Lychee Or Salak, also known as snake fruit because of the scales Salak is probably one of the best fruits I've ever tasted. Unfortunately hard to come by where I live and importing them is quite expensive. Every now and then I do get lucky at the local vegan store or asian supermarket and they have them for a few euros, but so rarely and then it's usually the drier variety, which still tastes good but it's... dry Oh to live in a tropical country where I could grow these things myself existing in the context of all in which I live and what came before me Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
