Former President Barack Obama has canceled his controversial 60th birthday party, which had been scheduled for Saturday at his island mansion on Martha’s Vineyard, with hundreds of celebrities,  former administration officials and Democratic donors invited.

“Due to the new spread of the Delta variant over the past week, the President and Mrs. Obama have decided to significantly scale back the event to include only family and close friends,” Hannah Hankins, a spokeswoman for the former president, said in a statement Wednesday morning.

The party had been months in the making and some guests had already arrived on Martha’s Vineyard.

Obama’s decision follows a report by The Post, which cited a source as saying the former president was creating a public health “nightmare” by trying to get nearly 700 people to his party amid a national surge of the variant and new restrictions.

George Clooney, Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey were among the 475 guests expected to attend alongside about 200 hired hands.

On Monday, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was pressed on the massive shindig and defended the party.

Update:
tmz.com
Barack Obama's 60th birthday party kicked off Friday night in Martha's Vineyard. If the pre-party is any indication, the real party Saturday night will be way bigger than previously thought.

It's unclear how many people will attend the big party tonight, but residents say it's way bigger than an intimate family and close friends.

Residents on Martha's Vineyard  said the Island is crawling with guests. Although the Obamas are loved by many on Martha's Vineyard, some residents are angry that their Island has been upended by the party.

Wow I can’t imagine hosting and serving 500 people. :air: But they probably planned it as things were getting “better” a few months ago.

Ghawd, imagine being rich :wtfga:

If I were this filthy rich, I'd host 700 boytoys for my 60th bday :mark:

Inviting 500 people to a party is ridiculous under any circumstances

Rest assured if I'm ever blessed with 700 sexy hunties, I will absolutely write a detailed memoir of what that experience is like :vegas:

It's a good decision to make. I would venture to guess though that majority of those that are invited are vaccinated. (Not that they should still have it.)

I think they were required to show proof of vaccination to attend? Along with a negative COVID test. Not too sure though

Mother of Puppies

It’s really sad that there are literally no big parties anymore - my dad is gonna be 70 next month and we’re doing nothing.

It will probably be like that for the rest of all our lives because of Covid, its ever emerging variants and anti-vaxxers.

It just makes me so sad. (Of course it’s the right decision and very responsible but still sad)
