y’all only live in a pop world and it’s sad. it’s incredibly interesting that everyone on this site dismisses rap music when it’s charting high or if someone says it’s a genius work of art. MBDTF is an incredibly acclaimed album. his first SEVEN works are all positively received or critically acclaimed. can’t say that about gaga.

idk why y’all always want to dismiss rap as a form of art but it’s lowkey giving me racist vibes. i don’t even like rap but i can appreciate it as an art form.

I don't live in a pop world and I'm also highly critical of people who are. I don't dismiss rap music as art at all either. I genuinely enjoy most of his albums but I'm not over here fapping into the wind like most of you over him. I asked how Kanye West is a musical genius and the only thing you did was come for stan culture and talk about acclaim. You failed to answer the question at hand.

WHAT MAKES KANYE WEST A MUSICAL GENIUS?

But all of Gaga’s projects are Green :oprah: isn’t that positively received?

I'm curious what people mean when they say this. He's not Beethoven. Other people produce his music too. I genuinely don't understand what you guys mean when you say this.

If you go to his Wiki page and read the Legacy section, this can give you a snapshot of how influential he has been :)

He totally changed the rap game and brought new clever styles to production. He's not as critically acclaimed as he is for no reason. I struggle with rap music, it's not usually my style, but Kanyes music I absolutely adore, there is so much to it.

Okay, so the metric here is "because they're good and influential" which I fully agree with. He makes great music. It's just odd to me that so many people single him out as a "musical genius" vs other musicians who are also influential and make good music. Is it because he says so?

I feel like this is another case of Azealia Banks or Axl Rose or Marilyn Manson or Quentin Tarantino where people reconcile their problematic behavior by claiming they're utterly unique artists who create untouchable work... and I don't think that's the case. They might have a certain je nais se quois, but they're not geniuses.

His sampling and mixing that creates a futuristic yet nostalgic tone that is unmatched

The storylines he creates thru very dark themes (death, mental health, aging, divorce, self-loathing)

The way he infuses emotion sonically into his music (Mike Dean's baass/guitar features are legendary)

His curation of up-and-coming artists he features such as Bon Iver, 070 Shake, etc.

The way his visuals/sound combine

His flow, period

...and I could go on :ohwell:

Please do. I don't know. It literally feels like you're all trying to explain Christianity to me and I'm Pagan. I adore all the art that has come from it but I don't have that connective thread of intensity from belief or fandom or whatever. Maybe it's just me. I genuinely really like his music, but I'm not there.

It’s still strange how no official word on why it hasn’t dropped though?

He's on Chromatica right now.

so like the Swinefest? :oprah:

no, bc it was literally advertised as demo songs while this was painted as the final album. It’s the false advertising that’s the problem how is it not obvious lol

I would suggest watching the full Runaway film, revisiting the chaotic Pablo era including the fashion show and tour on Youtube, and the recent Donda stream. Even Jesus Is King is beautiful sonically, and Ye is kind of messy and intense but solid (Ghost Town is fantastic).

I will, but just... try to objectively look at what you just said.

I mean the fact that most of it is making up excuses.

Also I'm watching Runaway now and it's stunning.
