I wasn't a member of the forum during any of this - did anyone ever give any insight as to why her vocals were not as good during Joanne as they were in Enigma? I dont think she sounds 'bad' at engima, but certainly she doesn't seem to be able to make it look as easy when she sings.

Please note: this isn't a diss thread, i am just genuinely curious.

She always has her ups and downs during the shows. It's normal because she played a bunch of shows at Enigma, and at some point her vocals got tired.

But then again with some rest, they go back to normal.

Besides natural ups and downs, I think that timing is everything. Joanne was while she was filming ASIB which I have a sneaking suspicion she tapped her vocal coach, Don Lawrence, for similar to how she did for Sound of Music. Her voice just sounds like she’s using better technique on the whole from posture to placement, etc.

When I saw her in Miami (feb 2020) her vocals were much better from whatever she was going through the previous years! She slayed, specially during shallow (which that vocal passage  is a pain in the butt for her).

She was recording for ASIB and also preparing for the new album with Tony during the course of Joanne so her vocals were maybe just more fine tuned. Plus I don't think she was smoking very much during that time. Enigma seemed to start while she was in the middle of going through one of the most difficult times with depression in her life and coupled with her self admitted chain smoking and the exhaustion she must have had after awards season she just wasn't on top of her game. I went on Halloween to Enigma and while it was a good show and she did seem tired. She sounded fantastic in person though! She could have taken the roof off during You & I! Maybe the venue and sound quality of the recording has a lot to do with it.

I'm guessing she was enjoying herself too much in Vegas. At one point she seemed fed up of being there for so long because she was in the casino almost every night.

oh thats cute that you went. I think it is so weird, that nearly everyone who went to engima around the times that monsters noticed a change in vocals said they didnt really hear any difference in her vocals.

Me personally agree with what you said, i think for Joanne she was really training hard for her health and her vocals, she was in great physical performance shape and really looked after her vocals. I think for engima she was partying and not prioritising her right training and it effected her voice. I did hear at the Biden performances and then the inauguration that her vocals were almost the same as they'd ever been - so maybe we are seeing her recover now :)

i think as you age you have to look after your vocals like an athlete has to train harder as our bodies le tus down, and i think that mixed in with what you said could be right. I am just scared she is losing her voice, but my friend showed me Christina Aguilera's bad vocals in 2011-12, and then her DWUW performance. Gaga has just been so good and made it look so easy all this time I guess.

I feel like her vocals are not as good as they once were but hopefully it’s just a dip and not a gradual decline!

Hopefully she leaves us wigless with these Tony performances since she’s had a lot of time to rest her voice :enigma:

I don't think we have anything to worry about. We know she takes extra special care of her body and takes ice baths so I'm sure she takes extra care of her voice too.

One of her most recent performances was Smelly Cat and she had a very powerful voice so I don't think she's lost her ability to belt. I think she just partied hard in Vegas.

I am not a vocal expert by any means, but when I attended Enigma and J&P in person December 2019, her vocals blew me away. I remember reading about her alleged "vocal strain" on GGD, and I didn't notice any of that listening to her in person. I wonder if the acoustics in the Park Theatre don't sound that great when recorded, especially on phones? I don't know what the deal is, but her voice still blows the roof off the house in person.

i agree with what oyu're saying, i saw a lot of people online saying her vocals wer egoing and posting bad videos,  but no person there said any different - there's just never been that stark difference. Maybe in 2009 i remember her sounding very deep on some televised shows, but then live form the crowd very strong with a unique tone. I think the engima show in 2020 they recorded just seemed a bit like she was really out of breath and struggling, probably like we said she wasn't prioritising the right things to help her there.

I attended Enigma and J&P as well and I did notice that her vocals weren't as strong as they had been before (I've seen her many times over the years). I remember seeing her for C2C and her vocals blew me away but at J&P it was just good. Not bad at all, but just not as show stopping :selena:

I think that it could be due to smoking, partying, exhaustion, depression etc. It could be anything really. I think that covid was a blessing in disguise for her voice because it's given her so much time to rest that she otherwise wouldn't  have had. She sounded great at Biden's inauguration.

I think the comments about ups and downs are spot on. Your voice gets tired after so many shows one right after the other. We also don’t know what she was doing behind the scenes. She could have been recording in the studio, re-recording vocals, writing and practicing new music, rehearsals, having a life, under the weather, etc
