Missing Ugandan Olympic left note saying he wants to stay in Japan

Julius Ssekitoleko was reported missing in Tokyo ahead of the Olympic Games after failing to turn up for a Covid-19 test, with officials saying on Friday that police were making an 'all-out effort' to find the 20-year-old, who was taking part in the Ugandan training camp near Osaka.

A Ugandan athlete had left a note saying his life in the African country was too difficult and he wanted to work in Japan, officials have said.

A 20-year-old weightlifter failed to qualify for the Games after his arrival in Japan, and was due to fly back to Uganda on July 20.

In the note, Ssekitoleko said he did not want to return to Uganda and asked the members of his delegation to send his belongings back to his wife.

He's going to be found super fast. Foreigners in Japan stick out so much and especially now since COVID has restricted the flow of new foreigners from visiting and working in the country. He'll probably end up in jail once caught too.

It sucks! We only know half of the story, and he might have a bigger reasons why he doesn’t want to go back… 

As an asylum seeker myself, this is just sad to me

Barely, they only contributed less than 1% because they really don't want any, and so had a very through vetting on refugees. According to Japan's Ministry of Justice (MOJ), refugee status was granted to only 44 out of 10,375 asylum applications in 2019.
And even someone is accepted in, they have more issues to face, such as housing and a job. 

Japanese housing system is complicated and rather racist. You would need a Japanese guarantor and sponsor. And even if you have one, the landlord can simply refuse your patronage because you are not Japanese. It is not very foreign people friendly, even people with legit working visa, (which are mostly white people), or Japanese who married a foreign nationals are still hard to find a place to live. So you can imagine how much harder it is for POC refugee that mostly escape their country with their body and a backpack only.

Updates from local news in Japan, he had been spotted, by both secuity camera and locals who reports, at train station in Kumatori station bound for Nagoya.

 

More info also said he left without his suitcase and passport.

Poor man. The situation in his home country  must’ve been very bad. And Japan is like one of the prettiest city in the world. As much as I sympathize with him, he must still follow the Immigration law and procedure.
