She basically worked for eating enough to work again. I'm glad you're in a better position now. I remember my father stealing stale bread from grandpa's locked sideboard, but my parents did not make me lack in anything (guess this definition depends where you come from; I still have the privilege to be born in a "first-world" part). This reminds me of a passage from Dante's Divine Comedy (Paradise XI, 66-9), where the old and poor Amyclas isn't afraid of Cesar as the emperor cannot deprive him of anything.
