How so?

People are outrage that this was kept quiet. It was going to happen sooner or later.

I knew this stuff was going on for a long time. I learnt about it in history class. It wasn’t a shock to me at all. I think there are ways to protest and things and taking down statues isn’t one of them.

Stop policing indigenous people's rightful anger and protest and maybe direct your energy somewhere useful like helping them?

They aren't policing anyone, they just don't think knocking a statue down is effective

Deciding what is and isn't effective and calling it insanity is very much policing their reactions

I’m always saddened when art is destroyed, sculptures defaced and toppled, paintings looted, music banned, books burned, as I don’t understand how this out of sight, out of mind, action solves real human problems. History cannot be erased nor the future improved by the destruction of art reflective of its time. To me, a free society does not constrain art or expression, but rather improves the future from contemplation and understanding of odious, never to be repeated past historical events.

I’m not policing anyone. I’m just calling for better ways to have your voices heard. Also I can help them without being destructive and damaging property. Destroying statues solves nothing and if anything they just gonna use our tax dollars to replace them.

Why should we treasure symbols of colonialism? It isn’t art, it’s territory marking :green:

The "property" you're talking about is a colonial symbol so to hell with it. Idk why anyone cares so much about statues that celebrate criminals on the grounds they colonized? And maybe it's time to also oppose the use of tax dollars to build and repair such disgusting commemorations instead of disagreeing with people destroying them.

BAM. You’re that girl, I knew you were. “Our tax dollars.”

The indigenous population of Canada is in mourning right now. The loss of our culture, our lives, and families lives, have caused many of us to react in different ways. While I personally would not myself knock down a statue, I sympathize so heavily with the people in this video because they are tired of the symbolism of colonialism and the grand reminders of the murder of our children and ancestors. THIS WAS GENOCIDE.

Safely removing the statues would be my preference. But definitely removal.

Would you also recommend having statues of hitler remain in place?

This isn’t art. It’s a symbol to remind people of their place. It’s a reminder of who’s their boss, who killed their ancestors and a warning that they should look up to them.

Statues are nothing. They are worthless. It's just a piece of metal. Literally who could care more about them than the pain Indigenous people have suffered for hundreds of years.

A John A. Macdonald statue was continually defaced with paint in my area last year until, guess what, they took it down! So it's not useless, it actually accomplished something.

This is the Queen Victoria statue in my local park yesterday, a winning! :vegas:

Ok I’m saying I wouldn’t personally agree or knock down statues. I sympathize with them too. It’s at terrible thing. I think we need better education and knowledge of the crimes these people committed.

im not even gonna answer the hitler thing cause obviously there shouldn’t be any statues of him

Some statues are art, but this wasn't. In fact, I don't think any of the statues I've heard of being pulled down in the last few years had any merit as art, nor were they intended to. They are (were) propaganda pieces, full stop.

You know what's insane? Having thousands of unmarked grave containing the bodies of thousands of children and adults waiting to be discovered. These statues are symbols of colonialism and monarchy (which haven't ended yet) and they deserve to be destroyed. No one needs commemorative statues of the people who murdered their grandparents and ancestors.

The two Queens were mere figureheads with no say or actual power in the actions of the Canadian government. They were not an actual dictator or commander.

You should remember that for other people across Canada and the world, they carry a lot of positive meaning and identity. Queen Elizabeth II and her father were significant during the WW2, and acted as symbols against fascism.

The picture isn't as black and white with Victoria too, she did have a symbolic role in ending slavery.

I think the residential schools are horrific, but they did happen.  Tearing down a statue is a childish way to solve a problem that requires much deeper work.

A lot of Canadians have been shocked with this act and it won't do the protestors any favours.

We can find a fair balance that supports indigenous victims that isn't knocking down culturally meaningful statues and actually does something meaningful for Canada.
