Before he got signed to his label he released 5 independent EPs, so his debut album Plus was an “addition” onto those EPs and sort of a culmination of everything that led him to that point. Multiply took everything about Plus and made it bigger or multiplied it, so bigger sound, bigger production, bigger shows, etc. Divide was very “divided” in its sound, so each time you skip to the next track it sounds different, so for example Dive sounds different than Shape of You sounds different than Perfect sounds different than Galway Girl and so on. Subtract will be a more back-to-basics stripped back acoustic album and fans expect Equals to sound like a culmination of all of his previous albums. They all have meaning, but similar to Adele with her age albums, people see the math symbol and know it’s an Ed album so he’s kept with the theme. He has a 15 record plan, so the 5 independent EPs, the 5 math records (+, x, ➗, -, =), and then 5 more that won’t be math related, then who knows after that.
