I agree. The more population the harder to sustainably manage. Naturally adding more ppl will only make the situation worse.

But i still think 8 Billion is perfectly sustainable if we did things properly... if #1 we were bigger into renewables and recycling and #2 if we werent such a consumption based society and didnt throw things away so quickly when it still works and is still usefull

Like our economic system creates these issues (again the 1 to 1.5 Billion ppl in developed rich Nations are already the majority of consumption which means if u cut population by 80% ud still largely still have these issues if the industrialized world is what remained)

Theres a lot of food that is grown that never ends up consumed... theres a lot of clothes and electronics or furniture etc that gets thrown out in favour of newer and better even tho its not yet broken... a lot of fishing literally throws away fish that isnt what they are fishing for... and of course a lot of stuff isnt recycled that can be and a lot of power still comes from fossil fuels

Sure lower population will help to some extent. But again the most populated regions arent the biggest problem creators and in any case birth rates are already dropping below replacement levels all around the world on their own anyway without measures because modern life basically already dictates less and less children hence the ageing of Earths population. In fact in the not too distant future Africa is expected to be the only continent on Earth with birth rates still above the replacement rate of 2.1 children per woman

So population is already gonna stabalizeband expected to start falling within our life times... but our consumerist ways will continue to be an issue even if we took very drastic measures and cut population in half this century for example. Its not gonna cut it, we need to consume less and what we do still consume to live and enjoy life needs to be done in a way that is more thoughful to mother nature. Thats whats gonna make the REAL big impact in my opinion

You have a very good point there. It should be marked as criminal the way some people consume and the way society encourages us to keep doing it. I see people throwing away their phones each year, and I wonder what do they do with the old phones since they are practically new? Why do they buy just a year later just because they were told so by x company?

I think it really will take a profound change of perspective from people to have a real impact in the world.

They also should set strict health and hygiene rules for what it's sold in their wet markets, and abolish breeding dogs for their meat.

That would help a lot.

A child is so so so expensive for minimum 18 years. I can barely scrape by on my own, having a child would bankrupt me. But for those who can afford it, go for it. It's nice to see China realizes at least something positive for those families who did want more kids.

Yeah right. Some people have more children because they’re able to collect more welfare.  I’m not against welfare, but some people milk it to the point where it’s almost unfair.

I would be mad at a post like this but when one of my bosses was fired, she started living off the welfare and child support payments for her kids (idk how many she has now, it was 6-8 with most of them having different dads :deadbanana: ). It is not an uncommon thing.

Honestly, I just feel bad for the kids being used as accidental sources of income for people who won't practice safe sex :toofunny:

I can not understand how anyone would ever even want more than 1-2 children. I think if you’re having so many children you should at least be confirmed to be able to afford it properly.

I don't understand anyone who wants kids period :poot:

So like what happens if you have more children than what you’re allowed?

I think they get fined.

I think people are too hung up on overpopulation. Nearly every expert says we'll balance out around 9 billion to 11 billion people by 2100 and growth will pretty much stop.

The problem for China is that they have 1.5 billion people all in one country :rip: if there were some type of global immigration effort to help people leave these densely packed places and move to other countries whose birth rates are starting to lag behind death rates then boom, problem solved.

Far, far easier said than done, obviously :laughga:

I learnt about China’s one child policy in geography and was actually very interested in the topic

the one child policy basically meant one “birth”, if you had twins then that was fine, but if you had one child and then got pregnant again then that was a no no.

So I imagine the same could be said here, if you have one child, you can give birth again.

EDIT: it’s quite a weird topic, I remember how if you had more than one child during the one child policy (unless it was twins or something), then you would get fined and your name would be put up on a board in your area almost to shame you, and it really did work :toofunny: people would lose friends and family because they no longer wanted to be associated with them :smh:

Yeah, and the welfare system here is literally ruining our economy (which by the way was already in shambles) :D :)
