Question about Record Labels & Entertainment Companies

I read online that Beyonce started her own Entertainment Company, Parkwood Entertainment, in 2008. They basically are a label that produces her music, and I believe they also signed Chloe X Halle. 

How does this work? Did she just recruit a team of people from the ground up? Are they also in charge of distributing her music and basically her whole music career, or is she still bound to a bigger label? Can Gaga do something similar?

I believe Park wood is still part of Sony, the label she is on. Kinda like When Madonna made Maverick Records...still a branch off of Warner Bros. Records.

So basically when you get so big as an artist and have enough power, you can ask your label to give you your own.
