I don't see Lana nor as a pop nor as an alternative artist. She is pop when you compare her to Kate, Fiona, Twigs, Bjork, Grimes but at the same time you can't put her in the same lane of pop as Gaga, Katy, Ariana and etc.  She is just floating in between.

I feel like they're not 100% mainstream but yeah I see what you mean. I definitely wouldn't put them in the alternative category that's for sure.

Mmm well, every artist has to have a distinct sound and style that set them apart from what is mainstream in order to stand out, judging by the same standards i'd say Madonna and Lady Gaga are more alternative, yet they're consider Queens of pop being two of the most misunderstood artists in pop culture. I think is this illusion of relatability and edginess that make ppl believe these popstars are alternative, rather than really subvertion of genres and take risking moves that can sacrifice the appealing of the mainstream public.

Most of these aren't alternative or "indie" (indie means independent, emulating the sound of independent music having the platform of a huge label isn't really indie).

My queen is Allie X and I know she is pop, but she is very alternative at the same time.

I am authistic, so don't be offended if I make a mess sometimes.

Given the age demographic on this site, I know she won't win, but Fiona. She, along with Shirley Manson, Alanís Morrisette, Courtney Love and others, made it cool to be angsty again.

The amount of taste in this post :vegas:

I also have to say, I think Billie has no place being called "alternative" in her music style. A lot of people are saying neither do Lana or Lorde, but I find them to be somewhat there.

I really love Billie as an artist but she, by definition, is not "alternative" as shes one of the biggest pop stars in the world. Her music is still pop but it's more interesting than most of the young artists today.

I also love Lana and have followed her career, she's taken more risks than I thought she would but would still consider her pop.

To me, alternative is more instrument focused and moody. All of these artists have some of this but out of these choices, Fiona defines that in her artistry.

Let's not forget Tori Amos

Edit: I also love Lorde but need to see more from her...
