My personal definition of racism in the general sense requires hateful or negative intent. By that definition Gaga is not racist. But expand the definition to include ignorance and indifference and it becomes a grey area. Also, I don't see why Americans stress so much about cultural appropriation. It's not offensive, and it shouldn't be. Actually isn't that the beauty of sharing nice atributes between different cultures? Also then white Americans are appropriating several European cultures. If anything, it’s cultural appreciation. It’s a very temperamental topic, as there’s a fine line between each thing. But the things she sometimes wears, I don’t see as appropriation. She’s educated. She usually does it to commend or relate to those specific audiences more. It’s respectful. She’s not doing it just for the look. The other things she wore - such as the locs, purely as a fashion statement with no actual purpose other than aesthetic? I’d say that’s appropriation, yeah.
