Charmed was 'bad' for the world

Holly Marie Combs and Alyssa Milano defend Charmed from the after ex-producer Krista Vernoff calls it 'bad for the world'. :saladga:

She said how she quit when she realized that the show started becoming too sexual with scenes that included mermaid pasties and getting the girls to wear less clothes.

Her words are that she started getting paid more money and "there's all this pressure, and all I can think is, 'I'm creating something that's now bad for the world, and I've had enough bad for the world in my life.' "

This is what Alyssa and Holly tweeted in response to these statements:

Holly Marie also added that she "never cared what producer or network exec wanted us more naked for their $. And still don’t. We knew how to rally against it and found our own power. And still do."

I believe it was a huge female empowerment in so many ways, even now, but especially back then. 15-23 years ago. :classy:

Charmed was my after-school TV show!

I loved it and always found the sisters to be empowering

Cause once you let it go you better know it's gone

Charmed, Buffy, Angel, etc these shows all helped a generation of teens - expecially girls and gays - to be more strong, they taught us that we had "the powers" to do whatever we want and to be whatever we wanted to be.

"Bad for world" my ass, asshole!

I see both point of views.

The full quote:

"I signed on because Charmed was a girl-power show, and about halfway through there was an episode where Alyssa Milano comes out in mermaid pasties and there was a huge spike in male viewership, and then every episode after, the question would come from the network, 'How are we getting the girls naked this week?' " she says, insisting there were no attempts at subtlety. "And they were throwing money at me, and the number keeps going up, and there's all this pressure, and all I can think is, 'I'm creating something that's now bad for the world, and I've had enough bad for the world in my life.'"

Puts things into perspective more. I think saying it is creating 'something bad' for the world is a bit much, but I also totally understand that executives turning this empowering "girl-power" show, aimed at young women, into titillating eye-candy for the male gaze would be disheartening and I could see how it could feel like selling out her original audience. There is nothing wrong with strong, sexual women, it's also problematic when that's the only representation of young women.

There is nothing wrong with women being sexual and Alyssa Milano is correct with her perspective on how it "gave permission to a generation of women to be themselves and to be strong and own their sexuality."

Krista Vernoff is correct in feeling as if it probably contributed to this narrative that women have to be presented as appealing to the male gaze and as sexually appealing and that sucks when that was not the initial vision for these characters and the show.

TLDR; Nothing wrong with how Miley Cyrus presents herself in a sexually empowering way, Lorde shouldn't have to do the same and it is just as important to have representation for both. Same kinda thing happening here. Alyssa vibed the Miley Cyrus aesthetic and Krista Vernoff seemed to envision more Lorde.

The male producers also never hid their intentions with the girls, they always wanted to make the girls look sexier & sexier to get more ratings. Holly said that they knew how to rally and find their own power so it’s not like the girls were forced to appear in sexy clothes.

Both points of view are valid I guess. Some TV Shows can look as "dated" if we watch them today or there's no way they'd do things like that in 2021 like Friends but that's the way the industry worked back in the day and slowly but surely things are changing.

Krista should be more concerned about fixing the mess that is Grey's Anatomy right now and give it a proper ending. The most recent seasons have been boring af.
