We did not need to hand a soundbite to Republicans to rile up rural voters who are already convinced, with good reason, that the Democratic Party has betrayed them.

And while I imagine there could be ways to implement this tax in a way that would not disproportionately hurt rural people, SHAME on every one of you who is dismissing the concerns of rural folks because “they shouldn’t live so rural”.  Have any of you ever been to a poor rural community?  These people don’t have the resources to leave even if they wanted to!  And forcing them to urbanize simply because you feel that the average rural person is singlehandedly destroying the climate?  Are you kidding me?  Rural America produces fractions of the damaging environmental effects that large corporations do, and we are most often the ones who also get **** on by those same corporations, who poison our wells, our rivers, destroy our forests, gut the culture of entire communities by pulling out the sources of employment that have sustained us for centuries.  Why do you think the opioid epidemic hit us so hard?  We’re forgotten, and so many of us have little left to live for, and no way out.

Have some goddamn compassion.  We are human beings too, no matter if our towns “vote red” or are “hillbilly trash”.  Our lives and communities are not for you to throw away in the name of efficiency.

I know this is a heated comment, but I am so damn tired of urban liberals acting like we’re stupid and/or worthless because we’re rural.  This is why the Democratic Party continues to collapse in rural and exurban communities, and why I have to work 36,000 times harder to elect decent progressive candidates who could actually help our communities.

And yes, I am having a bad day.

On topic:  I would be interested to see how this would actually be proposed as an organized plan.

Beautifully stated. I didn't fully understand the plight of rural America, even though I grew up there, because at 18 I bounced and left for 10 years from my hometown. I moved back last summer and its truly so upsetting to see the struggles they face. It's really grounded me so much and given so much perspective. We have got to do better to uplift these people because they are always forgotten. So many here in rural MC are still recovering from Hurricane Florence nearly 3 years ago. Its such a sad sight to see. :( I hate i spent years if my life advocating against them.
