Rural Americans and ppl who can’t afford to buy electric cars are now paying a bigger share of driving taxes bc of the transition to electric. This could restore it to being more equitable. I’m not particularly a fan of this just to be clear, and it think it would turn voters off. But so would any tax, and taxing the absolute richest among us is still a finite resource despite what the far left think. On average, as of April 2019, state and local taxes and fees add 34.24 cents to gasoline and 35.89 cents to diesel, for a total US volume-weighted average fuel tax of 52.64 cents per gallon for gas and 60.29 cents per gallon for diesel Generally this income is added to the generic revenue section– not ringfenced for a specific fund (i.e. road maintenance).
