Gimme More 35,402
BBC Two is set to produce its own documentary about Britney Spears and her ongoing legal battle surrounding her conservatorship. The programme is being made by Bafta-winning journalist Mobeen Azhar, and arrives amid renewed interest in the #FreeBritney movement. Earlier this year, the New York Times-produced documentary Framing Britney Spears covered similar subject matter, shining a light on the popstar’s life and treatment by the media. Under the working title Britney, the documentary began filming last Autumn, with Azhar journeying from Spears’s hometown in Kentwood, Louisiana to Los Angeles, delving into “one of the most passionate fan bases in modern celebrity”. Per the BBC’s description, the programme will see Azhar “attend a court hearing, finding himself in the midst of the ongoing battle between Britney’s conservatorship team and the passionate fans behind the #FreeBritney movement”. The documentarian said: “I went to LA in search of the truth of how Britney Spears, one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, ended up in a conservatorship." “I found myself in a world of lawyers, superfans and paparazzi and spent time with many of the people who’ve had a front row seat in Britney’s life.” Azhar added that the film “taps into the energy of the #FreeBritney movement and questions the industry, fandom and the laws that facilitate conservatorships”. It will debut on BBC Two later this Spring.
bionic 50,107
How weird that this is suddenly getting traction now when #FreeBritney has been a thing for years. I'm happy to hear it!

JazzGa 14,621
So is this the 3rd Britney conservatorship documentary announced now? The NYT one, BBC's one, and isn't Netflix producing their own or something? Kinda dissappointing that no one connected to Britney seems to be involved in this one. CannaeDrive 3,412
Not sure how I feel about that overexposure of the mental situation of a millionaire celeb and it's exploitation by so many medias. "Fame Is A Boomerang" - Maria Callas

TBH I trust the BBC's to be a proper expose rather than just a documentary... they're generally quite good at that when its not related to UK royalty or government

DpHitch1992 1,158
I was hoping the bbc or hbo would look into freebritney so this is great news! The bbc/hbo have a massive audience and huge reputation of releasing solid documentaries/investigations. I have a feeling the bbc have been able to get more access too... Per the BBC’s description, the programme will see Azhar “attend a court hearing, finding himself in the midst of the ongoing battle between Britney’s conservatorship team
Reject False Icons 4,777
I feel like the media again is queueing to get their buck from Britney instead of actually helping her, a circus media circle is forming again and that could make things more confusing if her dad decides to collaborate with some of them. The NYT documentary was not bad even though they avoided Lou Taylor entirely, but why would we need a documentary for every streaming platform existent
