Netflix Asks People Who Share An Account To Get Their Own

Netflix has started to crack down on users sharing passwords. The move comes in what the company calls a test that tells password borrowers to sign up for their own accounts without fully blocking them from continuing to use the currently shared one.

First spotted by The Streamable, Netflix users this week who borrow a password from family or a friend started noticing an alert about not living with the account owner;

If you don’t live with the owner of this account, you need your own account to keep watching.

The message includes an option to “Join Free for 30 Days,” or if you’re the owner, verify the account with a 2FA code via email or text, or “Verify Later.” While it looks like it would be possible to keep using the same account, it’s unclear how often Netflix might ask for the verification for those that pick the “Verify Later” option.

The Streamable heard back from Netflix on the change who said “This test is designed to help ensure that people using Netflix accounts are authorized to do so.” However, the phrasing of the pop-up feels more pointed.

Here’s the current fine-print around account sharing:

According to Netflix terms, an account can only be shared with members of your household: “The Netflix service and any content viewed through our service are for your personal and non-commercial use only and may not be shared with individuals beyond your household.”

I wonder why. They used to not mind and even encourage sharing accounts in the past. What’s the point of those more expensive packages if you can’t use it the way it’s meant to be used?

I bet you they’ll reverse this statement once people start cancelling their accounts.

People share because they keep jacking up their prices. It used to be 9.99 its not like 15.99

People share their accounts because Netflix has a built-in feature that allows you to do so. Disney+ and Prime Video do the same, Paramount+ afaik doesn't (idk why :rip: ) but the point is, these companies WANT you to share your account to save money, just don't take advantage of the situation by making your account publicly accessible or something.

Just pay for your own netflix or don't get it.

People are willing to pay &50 to $70 dollars a month for a cell phone the actual cell-phone (iPhone, Samsung, whatever) on top of their plan pricing just because it can refresh it's screen 1 second faster and comes in rose gold. But they get bent out of shape over paying $8.99 for a Netflix plan for hours upon hours of movies TV shows.

I have a couple streaming services and it's still cheaper than cable.

That’s what I’m saying, I’m saying I wonder why Netflix is all of a sudden caring that people are sharing accounts, when they used to not care in the past.

Because it helped them build popularity. By now most people who want Netflix either have an account or use someone else's so they need to find ways to make more money besides increasing prices.
