I understand that incremental changes work better, but wow. $15 is just unlivable.

Get the pinot ready, because it's turtle time.

This site is quick to hate Biden. Like the last 4 years of Trump didn’t put us in this position in the First place. Does anyone really expect that BIG changes can happen in 2 months? It’s consistent conversations between multiple parties.

Fighting the pandemic and getting the vaccine out is their priority.

A form of Student loans Forgiveness, and gradual minimum wage increase will eventually happen.

Some of yal have gotten too used to the word “soon“ meaning “never going to happen” and it shows.  :huntyga:

I mean my workplace did close partially because of the minimum wage hike :toofunny: it was one of the best jobs I had ever had too (pay was terrible of course but I enjoyed doing it & it was five minutes away from my apartment)

but you’re right, the effect was very neutral.

Yeah neutral overall across the board. Definitely in individual cases not such as that job u had. Sorry to hear about it btw :/

That wasn’t sarcastic btw I was genuinely agreeing with you, I didn’t notice it having a big effect and like I said in my case it was not the only factor of my workplace shutting down.

I am disappointed by this, but I hope it nevertheless still happens. He may just have to give up on it for now in order to get the bill passed.

You all do realize that Biden cannot push this alone by himself? It's not completely his fault if it doesn't pass.

Both of these.

The senate is evenly split and covid relief comes first. If he thinks for a second that the fight for $15/hr will delay much needed aid then he'd be a fool to NOT cut it and fight for it later :deadbanana:

At the end of the day,  we elected a centrist knowing he would cut the deals needed to get SOMETHING done and that's exactly what he's doing. So, while I support a $15/hr national wage, if it needs to be put on the back burner for now so people can get some help rather than no help while congress debates, then so be it.

He supports it and will take it up again later if it doesn't pass this time.

I know u werent being sarcastic dw :enigma:

All i know tho is i think most ppl have a poor understanding of the impacts of minimum wage (on the general economy anyway). It certainly helps low income individuals but for middle class and general economy theres offsetting factors

It never ends up being this big across the board boost in consumption many on the left often hope for but it also doesnt collapse job growth either and lead to mass employment like right wingers fear monger

On the whole the low income mostly benefit because their wages go up by a greater amount than the inflation it causes but the middle class is slightly worse off because of the price hikes while they dont experience wage growth from minimum wage hikes

Essentially the middle class subsidizes the poor and i think thats why across the board consumption in economy is largely neutral. The low income gain purchasing power which is offset by the small amount middle class loose so GDP and consumption isnt affected to a huge degree

Minimim wage ends up being about fairness and helping the lowest income but as a great wealth redistribution tool its severely overrated in my opinion. For wealth redistribution for the general population from the wealthy its more about taxes on the rich individuals

Yeah i’ve seen you say this a few times! As a low income person it’s obviously easier for me to see it as beneficial because the middle class already seem to live very comfortable lives in my eyes, but I agree that wealth taxes would be more beneficial for everyone.

I'm sure @Economy could school me in this but I'm wondering if it'd be more useful to fight for regulations that force corporations to raise minimum wage to $15 and let small businesses off the hook? Like, maybe being above a certain profit margin or something could put you in the "pay your people something they can live on, greedy f*cks" category :laughga:

Economists predict that a sweeping $15 minimum wage would cost over a million jobs and force a ton of small businesses to close. Those are real concerns that need to be addressed imo.

I know. On an individual to individual level benefits vs losses vary and the low income definitely benefit thats why i support minimum wage hikes in general (within reason) to help those most struggling

But for the economy as a whole definitely its not whats gonna fix big income gap issue

Edit: oh and what u said about comfort in middle class... definitely depends on individual circumstances but i woukd definitely say theres a huge portion of the population that complains about being broke but u can see them making obvious bad financial decisions and mismanaging money

Some ppl genuinely struggle even with good management but others just dunno how to manage money tbh

Idk how I feel about that tbh, small businesses can be just as exploitative (obviously not all but i’ve only worked at small businesses so it is definitely a good deal of them), I feel “letting them off the hook” would not be a good look and of course the big corps would complain about how they’re not being treated fairly and allowed to make a profit like everyone else or whatever whining that they always do

I hope we get a better presidential candidate in 2024. Biden was never going to fulfill his promises. This will be the most unproductive 4 year term.

Don’t play with me, it just hurts me.

It’s been 2 months in a pandemic year. You’re seriously basing your opinion on him for 2 months of work? I have to laugh.

If his plans gets us out of a pandemic. He will have done More than the orange man ever did. These 4 years will just be enough to reverse any damage Trump caused.

ALSO LET ME JUST ADD THAT as I live in Texas and suffered from the blackouts.
Our president declared a state of emergency for Texas and is actively working as diligently as he can.

There are so many areas to focus on, and can’t all get done at once.

I mean many jurisdictions have certain benefits and laws that are only required of businesses over a certain number threshold of employees. U could add a small bump in minimum wage just like other stuff... i lowkey have thought of this too...

But it couldnt be too big a gap tho... it could start to cause other gaps such as large companies having even more access to better labor while small businesses get the left overs of employees they can get with maybe less experience or drive etc and make small businesses stuck in a cycle of even less competitiveness....

Theres also the issue that a significant bump in pay requirements by size coukd discourage many businesses from bothering to invest or hiring past a certain threshold

Honestly i think progressive taxes on businesses (just like on individuals) is a better solution to competitive gaps than creating different minimum wages. I just feel like that has less unintended consequences in my opinion

Small business tax cuts for example can help offset higher labor costs from a minimum wage hike
