I do like her side pop projects but she makes great dance music. I wouldn't mind seeing her record something related to rock or heavy metal some day, even influenced like on Born This Way. Imo that is part of the problem, there is at least a part of her that wants to make music her fans will love and that will be successful. To me this is a weakness and undermines her creativity and expression. I feel like she tries to put herself into boxes and it can hinder her work.
