I wouldn't care to pay if it meant I had access to good quality TV and well maintained infrastructure

The BBC is a very corrupt and a Tory mouthpiece.

Most state broadcasters are. BBC America is a respected channel here and is generally above 'fake news' (except when it comes to the EU or Scotland/Ireland)

State broadcasters need to be removed.  The TV licence is so out of date.

Not for owning a TV, only if you use it to watch live TV :bear:. You don't need one if you use it for Netflix, DVDs, gaming etc. The BBC uses a licence fee in place of having adverts. But it's stupid because you may watch other channels and never watch BBC... and you still need to pay it :neyde:

Do those other channels have commercials tho? Do you all pay for a set top box to receive channels?

I'm honestly conflicted on having to pay for a tv licence in the UK because even though it's archaic the BBC delivers some really good content on multiple platforms. I live in Australia but I'm from England and trust me the arts/entertainment industry in Australia is non existent. UK has it's own culture and BBC produces some excellent tv shows, radio 1 etc. I think the system just needs to modernise and get with the times.

I'm in America, I'd KILL for BBC and BBC Radio content. I grew up on PBS (commercial-free but survives on inconsistent public donation and ever-threatened government art endowments) so along with Mr. Rogers Neighborhood, Bob Ross, Reading Rainbow, Where In The World Is Carmen San Diego?, Ken Burns' docs, Masterpiece Theatre etc etc etc, that's the ONLY way we got BBC,itv etc imported us. This is how Downton Abbey slayed in the states. Its how , more recently, I got to see Luther and Sherlock, National Theatre. Its how I grew up with hearing my family cackle watching Desmond's, Are You Being Served?, Keeping Up Appearances and The Young Ones. I'm STILL trying to find  a VPN that can access the iPlayer. That's how I discovered Misfits and In The Flesh and sooo many delicious docs and historical reality shows ( and prob one of the grifting issues that's causing the price to go up ). And the diversity and production value of your radio culture is so enviable.

You Brits really don't know what you have there. Grass is always greener....

Yeah they all have ads, there are options to pay for a box like Sky etc but I barely watch TV so I just have Freeview which still has a lot of channels.

yeah the consensus seems to be that if you want objective news about America watch BBC.

interesting. its seems the same with our cable networks and landlines (owned by the same company) over here: the less people use it --> the more people who have it have to pay for it --> the more likely less people will use it. I pay about $200 and increasing for my "triple play" (cable, internet, landline). I barely use 2 of these but its prudent to keep them bc 1) the internet cannot be my only portal to reality and 2) when sh1t hits the fan, which it always does, that landline and emergency broadcast messaging will be lifesavers.

Over-75s had previously been granted the TV licence for free. But the BBC said it could not afford to continue the universal benefit.

The BBC is very conservative and royalist though, and you can see it even when they're not talking about the UK.

Honestly don’t pay it. The content on the BBC is absolutely rubbish plus they cover up paedophiles. You are better sticking to the streaming services

I wouldn't say the content from BBC is rubbish at all, I mean we wouldn't have Rupaul UK if it wasn't for BBC. I can name a few shows off the top of my head I've watched recently from BBC like Bodyguard, I May Destroy You, Killing Eve, Line of Duty, Years & Years and Normal People.

Not surprising that one old institution tries to protect another (see also: European monarchies after the French revolution)

Can’t believe they have the audacity to increase the license fee and yet the queens on drag race UK still only win a RuPeter Badge each week

With the rise of streaming services this argument is defunct. Netflix, Amazon Prime, etc could've picked up any of these

I am not doubting they are stuff out there for people. I just don’t think it’s worth the £157+ a year.
