Today, the Süddeutsche Zeitung's coverstory is a queer manifesto, signed by 185 (!!!!) German actors/celebrities/entertainment industry officials that collectively have announced their coming out as LGBTQ+.

Under the hashtag #actout, the celebrities detail their experiences of being a closeted while famous and voice a call for more diversity in the German entertainment industry, along with more opportunities for LGBTQ+ people and more nuanced portrayals for LGBTQ+ people, especially for transgender and non-binary idendities.

This is massive. Are they prominent figures?

There are some very well known actors from popular TV series. I wish I could give a better scope of their popularity, but the truth is... I'm German, I hate German TV and I never watch German TV. :deadbanana:

185?? Holy cow! This is amazing.
How is Germany doing with the LGBTQ community? I suppose it has to be pretty bad if those celebrities had to be 185 to collectlively make their coming out :ohno:

We got equal marriage rights, trans rights are somewhat bad but good proposals have been made to change legislation and the changes are very likely to be ratified by parliament soon.

It's the society, public discourse and the way LGBTQ+ people get treated by police that's kinda awful and actually WAY behind. The general consensus of the general public is "if you're gay, good for you, but don't shove it down my throat, i don't wanna see it, i don't wanna hear it, i don't wanna know it."

Anecdotally, LGBTQ+ people are more likely to face persecution, humilations and aggression by the police force. HOWEVER, we have no clear picture because the police force refuses to show transparance period. In terms of racial profiling, right-wing extremism in the police-force and violence towards the LGBTQ+ community the police refuses to let itself get investigated.
