The first species to achieve sentience / technology / whatever you want to call it, precludes any others from arising, by its nature. Social and technological evolution vastly outpace biological changes. And, you know... we either killed off, absorbed, or out-competed every primate species that was more closely related to us than were the chimpanzees. (Presumably they survived -- barely -- by occupying a niche we didn't want.) No alien intervention is required to explain it, as much fun as that might be. Theres still room in between for a species to be more intelligent than any non human around thay still wouldnt be direct competition we had to kill off Plus that also has to assume any very intelligent species never possessed superior physical dominance because until very recently even with our superior intelligence it was not easy to dominate over much wild life and dangerous animals Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

There's actually some pretty interesting studies out there about our relationship with other human species that suggest we interbred with some of them but either starved or straight up murdered most of them They connected the "uncanny valley", an uneasy sensation you get from seeing something that's ~vaguely~ human looking, to a deep seeded desire to kill other types of hominid in our direct ancestors But yeah, biology and anthropology have provided a pretty solid explanation as to how we got to where we are. And even though human society has created an almost unnatural niche for itself, a niche is still a niche Just like mammals were suppressed from evolving beyond nocturnal bug hunters until the dinosaurs died off, humans have pretty much called dibs on the whole "let's make buildings touch the sky" thing. Another thing to consider is that sapience might just be crazy rare. Dogs, cats, apes, monkeys, dolphins, orcas, and birds are all animals that exhibit intelligence beyond most of the rest of the animal kingdom. Divinity doesn't show itself to science all that readily... Science has its shortcomings in the proof department... Extraterrestrials are the least believable if you look at the physics of travel .. ... Well yeah, we all have common evolutionary ancestors. Even with plants Humans "slowed" our evolution because the main driving factor of evolution is environmental pressure and we were able to adapt to our environments quickly or modify the environment itself. There's no pressure to grow taller when you can just grab a ladder. No pressure to grow more body hair when you can just throw on a coat.
