Knife 6,606
We love a diverse cast. I had no plans to see this, but I will just to spite the people upset over a black Ariel.

Melissa McCarthy’s got a ton of range so tbh who knows what route they’ll go with it. Can You Ever Forgive Me? was an incredible movie and the humor was pretty dark, muted, and minimal. Black people got snubbed so many times and they still do, this is just a distraction from the real problems in a 'give them cake' manner. I wasn't saying you mind Ariel being black, and I don't mind it either. I was just saying that in Disney's animated film Eric's kingdom could be Italy. She’s an animated fish. ‘Not forcing ideas where they belong’ it seems and what ideas are that??? it’s BASED on a danish fairytale but it’s been long disputed that the actual movie setting is anything but. The architecture is Caribbean and some of the accents are too. At the end of the day its not a real person. White people have literally played non-white historical characters as recent as a few years ago. Sooo..... and yea we’d like to have BIPOC in lead roles with new characters, new stories etc. but this is a classic and many of us are elated that we’re going to see someone similar to us on the big screen no matter what y’all say. also where there no BIPOC in Europe in that time period or something lmfaooo so weird. It’s a literal fictional kingdom under the sea. Do you know what race sea people are too? y’all are so weird istg. Y'all wouldn't be saying this if they made live action Tiana white. I still think this can be a good movie, and the cast choices seem alright to me personally, but don't come up with double standards. Danish culture is still culture, and going around changing it to fill your own purposes is not a great thing. Just like with black, Asian, or any other culture. I'm all for BIPOC representation but I think they would be better off creating new exciting and beautiful stories based on black culture, or multicultural tales. Instead, this feels like they're just throwing a bone to BIPOC like "there, here's your 1 BIPOC character so we look woke and you can give us your coins without cancelling us". But alas, here we are, and I personally don't have any problems with it. IDGAF

If they were remaking the Hans version of the movie where it actually was danish then you’d have a point but no where in the animated film did it specify a location or culture. Tiana’s entire story is rooted around black culture.

Tiana’s entire story is rooted around black culture. Lmao not you having explain why white washing is bad the patience. To me, this little mermaid scenario is a nothingburger. Like, Peter Parker should not be Black because his character is a white dude in queens. That’s VERY different from a black dude in queens. So flipping the race doesn’t make sense because it would fundamentally alter his character which would make him not Peter Parker. Hence the creation of Miles Morales. but Ariel’s race wouldn’t realistically be that big of a factor since she grew up in Atlantica, a made up underwater kingdom. She can be Black (or East Asian, south Asian, Latinx, etc.) and it doesn’t change anything about her character or the story. Change Tiana to white and you fundamentally change Princess and the Frog. Her dynamic with Charlotte was predicated first and foremost on their different places in society with race being the determinant factor of that place (Charlotte’s family is wealthy and white and employs Tiana’s mother because given the era this is how things shook out for white vs. Black dynamics). Her ability to get a loan would change. Her whole philosophy of having to work hard to get what you want is also related to her Black identity. Like. Oof. You cannot just swap race and have the story make sense (like you said). But with Ariel I don’t really see the problem with it. All other things aside, I don’t know why anyone cares when Halle has such an incredibly beautiful voice. At least they got that this time and we don’t have a Beauty and the Beast fiasco . (Honestly an Oscar snub that year by not just me but a fair few critics as well; it was a stacked year tbf) is about the furthest thing from gross-out humor and screaming. If you ever get the chance to see it, I highly highly recommend it. She’s wonderful in it and it might convince you that she’s a fully credible and dynamic actor. Hell, her on Gilmore Girls also shows that decently. Completely unlike her other characters.
