Well we don't know how Sam is reacting do we. The "outrage" is warranted as long as it is a platform to educate people, and it is one in this thread.

I didn't say you didn't say Shane or Shawn.  Also easy to mistake.  The question is if you're "forgetting" intentionally or not.  Calling Shawn "Shawna" for example, that would be offensive.  But not Shane or Sean, that's just they forgot or didn't know.

My first and last name are both first names.  People - who have I corrected many times - mistakenly call me by my last name (usually the short version of my last name), or use "Mr. *first name".  And it never bothers me because I know it's just a mistake.

The point of Shawn vs Sean is that it's just a thing where some people people are conditioned to not think about it and go by what they're used to.

Yes its bad and we should all actively strive to learn people’s pronouns and get them right, but we know Shawn had no malicious intentions with this. Its always a case of context, and this definitely doesn’t come from a place of blatant transphobia or outright denying someone’s identity. I’m sure he’ll apologise soon when he realises the mistake he made.

My issue with outrage like this is that people jump to conclusions, Overreact and blow things out of proportion. I bet that even if shawn apologizes for this(which he should) people will still hold it against him.

the reason why it's an issue to have a full team of cisgender people, specialists or not, is that they do not experience the trans experience. they don't KNOW what dysphoria feels like, they don't experience it, so they don't have the knowledge or first hand experience required to have sufficient empathy with the patients. hence there's worryingly high rates of underdiagnosis and trans suicide.

the issue with cisgender people being the ONLY ones to study and make decisions around transgender healthcare (since transgender people are seldom included at all) is that since it isn't their issue, or something that they have experienced the full brunt of, they cannot give sufficient attention or priority to the issue. it isn't science denial, it's the refusal of the system to include transgender people in trans diagnosis or trans funding that causes issues.

You're betting on a lot of things here. What's "blowing things out of proportion" or "jumping to conclusions"? People should be wary of people who use the wrong pronouns on others, specially with a person as famously non-binary as Sam Smith, but no one is cancelling him for that lol

Shawn doesn't even recognize his own sexual orientation... you really think he's going to go so far as to properly gender someone? Baby steps for Little Miss Mendes, guys. 

(That said, obviously people make mistakes and obviously Shawn would never do that on purpose and I ****ing hate the fake hysteria and most people who look at Sam Smith see a man lol so...)

I wouldn't know sam was non binary if not for all the threads about it on gagadaily and im fairly into pop culture myself . Their pronouns may not be as notorious as you think .
