Surely criticism as a profession hinges upon the idea that some opinions are worth more than others? That the critic's discerning taste and knowledge of their subject means they are better equipped than the average listener to make an accurate evaluation of the quality of a work of art? The man in the street has every right to voice his opinion that Kidz Bopz are better than Mozart, but there's not much of an argument that he should be paid for his opinion. If a journalist wants to write about Kidz Bopz being better than Mozart then I’d love to hear their opinion. I might not agree with it, but I will respect it. It already sounds more interesting than some hipster trying to convince us that Indie records are better than pop music. Ps.
