This might be a controversial point, but here it goes...

I feel like fans, primarily gay stans specifically, are also to blame for this.

The toxicity of stan culture fuels the level of criticism experienced by female artists.

It’s all about the snide remarks, the funny gifs, the poking fun, the minimising of one’s achievements to make others bigger... It’s all just toxic.

This is to a great extent also part of a bigger problem within gay culture... But that’s another conversation entirely.

Tbh. I'm not saying the GP doesnt have a little bit of a double standard too

But the ones that are most vocal about the criticism and create storms on social media to drag female artists and stuff is literally stan culture on pop forums and twitter

If it wasn't for those ppl entertainment media wouldn't have an audience to spew their negative gossip and coverage to in the first place cuz the majority of people don't actually care

I'm not sure I agree.... I mean, we only see it from a GGD/Twitter perspective which seems to be loud, entitled gheys. However, the GP are just as bad. Why can Ed Sheeran hop on stage and be as boring as paint drying, but someone like Ariana is expected to put on a show? Why can Justin Bieber get away with being vile to his own fans and also being basic, yet someone like Bebe Rehexa is called a bi*ch for calling out her own fans? Why is it acceptable that a male artist is cool for opening up about drug use, yet cringey when Demi does it?

The double standard isn't mainly caused by gay fans. There are many toxic fans in stanbases who are catty and bit*hy towards others who see another pop girl as competition for their fave. But there is nowhere near as much criticism thrown to men.

Gay fans only make up a small portion of what's actually going on. They are probably the loudest hiding behind a stan account on Twitter... but it doesn't mean Gay fans are the majority to blame for the double standards and unfair criticism thrown towards female stars.

I agree and disagree. I believe her biggest bullies were definitely gay men who were harsh about the way she looked and presented herself. However, in general, we are not the main contributing parties to the sexism in the pop world. It is deeply rooted in decades of hatred toward powerful women in the industry.

I also feel as though Female artists are just better. People see female artists and expect a grand show because they’ve always delivered it that way. When I see an award show line up, I always expect the women to bring it because male artists are just lackluster to me. Women have to do more in general which sucks but I’m glad they feel that need to always try and innovate because  pop music and pop culture would completely die. I do feel like the gay men on Twitter negatively contribue to the high standard of pop women. They expect perfection and ridicule over anything they don’t necessarily like- no matter how small the issue is. “Her wig was bad” “the shoes are a no” etc.

It’s a double edged sword because I love that women try hard because they are pop culture but they don’t sell as much as these basic men. Enigma
